Help 2001 rear end problem

Hey everyone
I just got 3.73s installed and the guy who installed them was telling me that the carrier was eating away the outside of the bearing and he warned me that if we replaced the bearing and not the carrier that it would continue to eat away the bearing...now hes telling me that the bearing is coming loose and the shimms arent holding the carrier tight and it is moving back and fourth when im driving....can anyone explain how serious this problem is and does anyone know where i can get a carrier for a decent price...(preferably online)...also can i replace my dif with a "Ford Racing 8.8 in 31 Spline Traction - LOK Limited Slip Differential w/ Carbon Discs" from americanmuscle.com and will this solve my problem? i am hoping that i can replace my 28 spline with a 31 spline if i can afford it but if it isnt going to solve the problem ill have to wait...im trying to find the easiest way to get this fixed because i can feel it getting worse when i am driving...i also need to replace my clutch but this seems to be more important at the moment!
thanks everyone!

chris

I wouldn't call it a common problem you're having, but it happens enough that there is a fix for it, I'll try to do a search and find it, but there is a fix to where you won't have to replace the entire rear unless it's tore up too bad.

500 for the carrier? an entire limited slip is like $260 and you can get the matching 31 spline axles for another $280. and after that you pretty much never have to worry about your rear end going out on you.

$1000 to fix the carrier? That guy is smoking crack, and expecting you to pay for it. You can upgrade for a lot less and never have to worry about it again. Might want to find someone else to do the work though. Out of curiosity, what did he charge you to install the gears?

Damn bro, $632 to install gears? I hope it came with a lot of vaseline, that's way over priced. They may do great work, but the prices are ridiculous, you should look around and see if there are any other good shops around, that's more than double what I've seen quoted.
