Detonation sounds like,,,Waht??

ok in all honesty whta does detonation sound like?? Is it very apparent in sound or could it be small and in certian areas of the throttle or will you hear it all the time just more so in some areas? Does it sound like diesiling or as if in the wrong gear?
Is it loud pinging or a knocking ,overloaded chugging??
i am just asking a question because i have no idea what it would sound like if i was to even hear it.

It can be loud or soft, the best way I can describe the sounds is imagine if you tossed a few very small screws (like for sunglasses) in a coffee can and shook the can up, that ping clanking sounds is pretty close. It usually happens under, especially when you give a lot of throttle and very low rpm.

It sounds like driving at low speed in a higher gear with the gas pedal pressed to the floor. In severe cases it can sound like marbles inside your valve covers violently moving like popping popcorn.

Mine has only done it once and it scared the crap out of me... I was running WOT with 9# of boost and it was so cold the car started loosing fuel pressure since my fuel system wasn't large enough. I was lucky and let out immediately, others, needed a dustpan to pick up the pieces of their engine.

So i was to say that in certian small areas what i am hearing is........ well its like i need to down shift in my automatic. and what i do is turn off the OD and it sounds find but i really cant hear due to my exhaust drone. I can say i do not hear any of the sounds that have been described so far(thank GOD).. Ya'll been a lot of help thanks.
I may just be hearing a differant sound than what my engine made before i swapped out heads due to spark plug ejection. i just replaced them with FMS heads from summit racing.
Thanks again

Good insurance is to make sure you run 93 octane gas. If you run 87, you're asking for it to get hurt. For the extra $1.50-$3 per tank it costs to fill up with 93, just do it.

I use 91 octane. Ok let make sure i understand this , I would most definatly be able to notice if i was experiancing detonation? I would not be the only one to here a slight knock/dieseling like a glug,glug,glug,..... at certian low rpm's----correct?

please somebody shoot me an answer.
i have figured out what this sound sounds like to me"an old push rod motor that needs the lifters rerun", i was thinking that it could be the conventional motor oil in the engine?

You should most definately hear detonation. The number one cause is too high a load without adequte throttle input. Most will experience it with either too much spark advance or trying to pull 3gear from a stop. Trust me I found out what it sounds like doing such a thing. (I was still very new to my short throw.) It will most likely make a loud rattling style of noise. Similar to the lifter rattle you hear from most deisel.

03 Zinc Yellow GT. With enough bolt-ons to really have some fun.

There is a thing called spark knock which happens when loading the car on a hill or slow speed in a higher gear. It isn't bad on the engine if the car is running the correct air fuel ratio and not overheating.

Technically it is still detonation though.

What tune are you running in the car, chaddict? If you have a CAI and exhaust mods, you might be running lean (which can cause ping/detonation, though just those mods usually are not particularly dangerous). Adding headers and deleting cats can aggravate any pre-existing lean condition, and then if you get some obstruction in the fuel delivery (dirty injectors, dirty fuel filter, weak fuel pump, bad fuel, water, etc) it can catch up to you.

Get the car on a dyno and you will know where you stand.

my mod list is: bbk x-pipe,flowmaster 40 cat back, bbk CAI , 75mm throttle body, diablosport w/custom tune. i am concerned because i recently replaced the heads with FMS heads from summit and now the motor makes not so much a bad noise just a differant noise anfd it has me freaked out because i DO NOT want to do it over again, ever. ya it was a major PITA
