Disconnect the battery before you do anything. And if my memory serves there are two 10mm bolts on the left and right sides of the steering wheel you have to remove to remove the driver airbag from the steering wheel.

I'm not sure on your car but I know with mine only the dealer has the correct scanner/code tool to reset the fault code that was set when they deployed. A friend of mine that owns/runs a collision repair center reccomended I not plug in the bags or the seatbelt pre-tensioners till a Ford dealer could run diagnostics and verify all the sensors and control module were ok.
Plus I already know what it feels like to get hit in the face with the drivers side airbag and i didn't want to do it again

If the air bags deployed, you will need a safing sensor, and one or both crash sensors. The dealer, or a good independant shop can check out the car and tell you what all needs done. While the risk is small, air bags are an explosive and have made the ill informed dead or maimed.

Shop around. You should be able to get it done for about half that.

Still not cheap.

Also be aware that frequently the metal brackets that mount around the air bag and which hold up the horn pad (the big section in the center of the steering wheel) are usually distorted when the bags deploy and will need to be replaced. You can tell this is happening if as you fit the new parts, the pad sticks up too far (leaving a big gap between it and the rest of the steering column).

Yes, the good ones do, and if they need to get part of the job done through a dealer (or buy parts from them) they get discounts you can't.

Price it around. Call the local body shops.
