hey guys i have a 04 40th anniversary gt automatic. i want to switch it to a manual though. i have the person to do it and i need to know where to find a complete kit to do this. i have not found any online or on this site that will fit my car. thank you
I bought a T56 kit for my 02 GT to replace the T3650(manual to manual) from AMP Performance. Overall I was satisfied with the price and service. The only thing that was sub par was the quality of the driveshaft shortening job. If you were to choose a kit from them that includes a shortened driveshaft I would request the original instead and have it shortened locally. For an 04 they show a conversion from auto to a T3650. If they can provide this I would imagine they could convert to a T56(6 speed) or a different 5 speed if you are interested. Tom there was very helpful on the phone.
2 thousand isnt bad and thats everything correct? I actually asked someone who told me to try a t5 toploader because i can get a kit for around 1200. Will a t5 even work in my engine? anything else will be appreicated thank you bro

The T5 was not designed to fit the 4.6 motors. There are ways to do it, but why bother? The T5 is weak and will not standp up to much abuse (unless you get a modified one).
I didn't click on the link TempletonGT gave you but make sure the "kit" includes everything, i.e., pedals, cable linkage system, bell housing, flywheel, pilot bearing, clutch kit(including throw out bearing), transmission, shifter, console plate, driveshaft (or at least the front slip yoke for the new transmission and a conversion u-joint) as well as the necessary hardware and wiring to complete the job.
I'm not 100% sure on the mustangs but make sure the pedal hangar bracket under the dash is the same between automatic and a manual. Most of the time, they are the same hangar bracket, you just have to change the brake pedal as the pedal pad is a different size on an automatic verses a manual car.

I did this swap ONE time. You have to remove the driver's seat for access (unless you are a tiny person, which does not describe me since the age of 7). You then just start removing the dash until you can see all the hardware Richard mentioned. You WILL be disconnecting dozens of wires, cables, hoses, screws, bolts, brackets, connectors, and so forth. The console comes next...
That's BEFORE you remove anything, which of course is before you INSTALL anything.
Its a heckuva a job. And it requires a TON of time, even for a professional in a fully fitted shop.
Also, you WILL have squeaks, rattles and gremlins in your accessory functions and air vents forever afterward, assuming BEST case and the install is as professional as anyone could ask.
On my PITA-ometer, I have this one pegged at the top of the page. DOABLE, no doubt about it, I did it, and the car ran just fine afterwards...
But I would not do it a second time.
Better solution: Sell your car, and buy a 5 speed car.
But IF you wind up doing it, take LOADS of pics (you will need them, and make sure your friend doing all the work TAGS every little wire and hose (etc, etc) as he disassembles so that everything will go back together again afterwards.
As far as complete kits that include all this stuff...
I have never seen one. The only way to keep the cost down would be by pulling parts from a donor car in a junkyard. If you have to buy all those parts retail, the cost will be high.
Post up those pics. This would be very handy - this question crops up frequently (do a search on the forums and you will find the others).

thanks for the great advice guys the guy doing it is a certified ford mechanic and has done this 2 other times. i am friends with his son and thats how i am able to be so lucky to find such an experienced person. i was also looking at keisler rebuilt transmissions as an option and building my own kit.
Before commiting to such a huge project and big change on your car, consider the many ways to improve your automatic tranmission to keeping up with and out performing alot of manuals without the risk of blowing shift.
in the 4.6l tech forum I started a great thread for people with built automatics, and people wanting to bulid. My setup (although still working on install) is posted there as well.

I am Keisler ( ) and while we do sell transmissions, T45RS's, TKO's and T56's) we don't have a "bolt in" kit for a '04 Mustang that is an automatic. We do have a new T56 Magnum that will fit the '04 platform like it was from the factory. The things I wouldn't have is the cross member, pedals and/or linkage.
$2000 sounds awful cheap for a complete changeover kit for any car (and I know because that's what we do is complete swap over kits for old school muscle cars). Hell, the tranny alone is $2200.

im really interested in the keisler t45r/s and just getting the pieces to do this swap step by step
Our T45R or RS will fit your car perfectly and it comes with bell housing and pivot ball and I could probably scrounge up a used fork too. I would have a new clutch, flywheel, slip yoke and u-joint but you would still need pedals and cable linkage system, starter shim plate etc...
The T45RS is a stronger transmission than the Tr-3650 and IMO, it is better and definitely smoother shifting. The T45, like the T56 6 speed, is a single rail linkage system where the 3650 is a multi rail system. What that means is the single rail system has 1 main shift rail running thru it that the shift forks hang from while the multi rail uses 3 main rails with 1 fork on each rail. Single rail systems are noticeably smoother shifting as compared to a multi rail.
The T45RS is rated at 425ft/lbs continuous, at the input (4th gear) and will work great if your car is mildly modded. If you are planning on 500+ft/lbs in the future, then this might not be the best choice for you.

ive decided against the idea. Its just too much to put into the car and it may still have problems afterwards. Im of course a poor college kid too which doesnt help. Thanks for everyting tho guys
whoever ends up doing it though if you arnt doing it, should defently get a free kick to the balls!!! that is the biggest pain in the ace i have ever delt with, but in the end i felt better cause he was on the ground for 20 mins!!!!! haha fun times....
