here's my problem, i previously had flowmasters with an o/r h pipe. the sound was great, but i lost a bit of power. i recently had to change midpipes cuz it got all banged up, and decided to try a o/r tru-x pipe. i got the power back, which is great, but the sound changed. which i expected but hoped against. now, i've read many different forums mentioning that flows don't go as well with x's as straight throughs do. so i got a straight through catback, similar to stingers or magnapacks. now the x type sound(nascarish) is amplified and its way too loud.
my first question, is there any other muffler or type of muffler that i could use to make it sound like the other type? i have a feeling that wihtout changing the x pipe, that's the sound i'm stuck with, but i had to ask.
and my other question, what would be the best way to tone down the ridiculousness of the loudness. maybe some other muffler? i thought about a magnaflow muffler, one down from the magnapacks, but my muffler guy said they wouldn't be too much quieter. i also asked about welding in some hi flow cats, he said that would help much more.
any advice? i don't mind opinions, but i'm really looking for comments based on what you guys have heard or what you have had/tried. any help will be greatly appreciated.
Two things come to mind immediately, first get a catted X pipe, second get 3 chamber flowmasters...I had the same issue with my 347, it was stupid loud with no cats and 2 chamber...good for impressing rednecks and scaring small children but terrible for cruising...even with 3 chambers it's loud, but not crazy..they do cost a bit more, but se la vie..oh by the way get the connectors on, you'll love them

first do you have any cats? because pypes with no cats are very loud i my self have x pipes with flow masters and the car sounds great also there is 2 chamber and 3 chamber wich are not as loud as the 2 chamber
im not getting how any human can notice less in power just from exhaust and low back pressure. i think its in your head.

i currently don't have cats. i had the american thunder kit previously, are those 2 chamber? kinda reluctant to go back to flows cuz i just tossed those, but if that's what sounds best, i'll check into it. will the 3chambered flows make it sound more like the stock h with flows? i really like that sound. plus, to use anything but a straight through(stinger style) exhaust would require replacing the entire catback, not just swapping mufflers.
@schon, there is a difference, enough that it can be felt. i originally had the o/r h with flows and it felt like i was dragging ass. the engine would scream but it wouldn't really move. i couldn't even get full boost with my sc. i slapped on the x and can clear 10psi pretty easy now, and it picked up that low end. not sure how it'll translate on a dyno, but i sure can feel it. and i'm pretty sure, not positive, but pretty sure the extra 1.5psi i can get will add a few hp's.
It would be a lot quieter with adding cats, and also take out 99% of the dreaded highway drone.
I have a UPR offroad X and 1 chamber flowmasters on my car, and everyone likes the way it sounds. A friend of mine has the BBK X and 2 chamber flowmasters on his, and it sounds like crap and is louder and more raspy than mine. The Magnaflow Tru-X is a lot like the BBK, I believe, where the X is actually a stamped steed piece instead of being pipe all the way through like the UPR. I would say that piece is the reason for the loudness and raspiness. Adding cats will kill it down though.
you guys were right, adding cats made all the difference in the world. no more pops or backfires, the tone is ultra smooth and deep. and it's quiet enough to hear the whine of the sc and whoosh of the blowoff. sounds real nice. now just need to get it retuned and see what my power's like.
