Default 1999 Mustang GT: DOHC 4 Valve SWAP questions

Hey guys, the name is Rob. I'm 18 and live in RI. I have a 99 Mustang GT 5 speed with 3.73's, full bolt on's, and a tune, etc. Car has 56k miles on it and I've been toying with the idea of changing my intake manifold and throwing a zex 100 shot on come next summer considering its the best way to make power on this friggin 2 valve motor. My father on the other hand has an 04 mach 1, 17k, with some bolt ons and a tune. I fell in love with his motor, and really am wondering how difficult it would be to buy a 4 valve motor, sell my 2 valve and drop the 4 valve motor in my car rather than doing the 100 shot next summer. I would then somewhere down the line put a blower on the 4 valve. Could I get away with just buying the motor? would it line up with my T45? I am just curious as to what I owuld be getting myself into. For those of you that know a bit more about this. What would you suggest I do to make some power? (keep in mind im 18 and not loaded, i jsut bought my winter car (03 SVT focus)). What do you guys suggest I do? I need to make more power my friends with LS1 cars are smackin me around, and I just wont have that. Thanks a ton guys.

Rob

Honestly there is a long and expensive process in doing that. My opinion if you really want a 4V motor sell your car and get a Mach 1 or a Cobra. But if you really wanna keep your GT and stick a 4V in it go for it, if you dont have deep pockets then i suggest you save your money and just get a new car

I was kinda worried about that. But the only problem is.... my car is worth nothing now..... granted its CLEAN and never seen any snow or anything and is always garaged its worth nothing. its 10 years old, and its a 2v. Car is worth at the absolute most 7 or 8 g's. An 03-04 mach your looking at mid to high teens for a nice one with low miles. So any suggestions on building up the 2v then? i would love to vortech the car... but for the money the power u get isnt worth it on the 2 valve cars. idk what to do.

I beg to differ sir. I just completed a poor mans 4V swap into my 96 GT and I am in it for $450 with a brand new FR King Cobra clutch. Not a cobra motor, but a 97 Mark VIII motor. Fixing to post a step by step guide to give you an idea.

This was designed around the Mark VIII, but the cobra would be nearly identical.

Glad to help. The Cobra swap would actually be easier. You wouldn't have to worry about the EGR tube or the IMRC relocate, or finding headers.

I've heard guys running into tuning problems when putting a DOHC in a GT using the existing wiring harness and computer?
The best option would be a 99-01 Cobra or 03-04 Mach1 5 speed motor with the Forged Crank along with their complete wiring harnesses and ECU which could start to get pricey.
yeah you can put a Lincoln Mark VIII motor in but your gonna get an inferior intake, cylinder heads and cams, definitely the budget approach!

I have yet to make a complete opinion on the tuning since I have a few sensors unplugged, but it's running decent even with the MAF and the IAT unplugged as well as a bunch of exhaust/vacuum leaks. Besides, the GT computer can be tuned for a 4V engine.

The cams are almost the exact same on the Mark VIII, just a minor difference and the cylinder heads are the exact same as the 96-98 cobra. The intake I am not sure about.

if you doing a good amount of boost your ONLY option is an 03-04 its a different animal compared to any other 32v.

Not the only option, but probably the easiest. You could get forged rods and pistons to go with the Teksid block from any year cobra and be just as good.

ok im getting alot of options thrown at me. haha, what kind of money do you think im looking at if i was to take out my 2v motor and sell it stock, and sell all my bolt ons that are on my motor (tb, plenum, u/d pullies, cold air, mass air meter, timing adjuster). then buy an 99/01 cobra motor, or 03/04 mach motor and put it in and make it work properly? i know its an extremely broad question. im just curious as to what is the easiest thing to do without spending LOADS of money.

It's all about bargain hunting man. With the PI motor, you could probably get around $600-$700 for it, the PI swap is worth about $500 on it's own. Not sure about the aftermarket stuff.

The cheapest cobra motor that I can find around me is $1600, which is why I chose the Mark VIII/Pick U pull route.

I agree the 03-04 isn't the only option, yeah you get Manley Rods and OK pistons but your also using a heavier iron block.
Teksids with Forged Internals are the way to go!
