i have a 2001 5spd gt and the the last two days my transmission has been making clanking noise. sounds like metal or aluminum clanking or hitting eachother, its not a grinding noise. it makes this noise mostly when reversing and it has only made it twice in frst gear. it only does it once and usually when the car has been sitting. i know its hard to describe a noise online but does anyone know what this could be?? thanks

If it does it again. Pop it back into Neutral and put it back in that same gear. If it does not make the noise then me and you have a similar problem. I'm not sure what it is hopefully someone can help you. Mine has been doing it for months and everything is working fine.
ok. welllllllll id have a little more precaution than that. my second gear started making noise, more like a clanking than a grind. actually, there was no grinding. and BOOM!!! 2 weeks later it went grenade style all over babcock (local road). didnt have a problem shifting at all. went in and out of gear just fine, and only clanked under load also. so id check your fluid, make sure theres enough in there. if so, just be easy on it and take it somewhere and have a tranny guy take it for a spin. unfortunately theres not a whole lot of narrowing down transmission problems without having someone literally look inside of it.
but try that, and let us know.

First thing I would do is check the u-joints, they are a simple and cheap fix and often cause a clunking.

I dont mean to jack your thread but I have a tranny problem also. Sometimes when i shift into 5th it grinds and its only in low rpms like 3000 or less. It goes right into gear but grinds on the way.

sounds like a syncro. try pausing for a second before going into it. see if that helps. i had a 4th gear syncro like that. anytime i downshifted it would do it. but id pause for a moment and then itd go in just fine.

ALLLLLLL depends on weather u want a drag car, track car, or pretty much only a dd. whats ur plan for the car?

well i want my car to be a dd with some drag trac but not tons just to see what it can do. but i would like to shoot for around 300 350 max hp to the wheels NA of course. but i would still want to keep it so it can still be driven on the road without breaking a sweat all the time. i have been thinking about a 6 speed over the 5 just for the extra highway gear. am i wrong about all this?

well really, if you plan on keeping a dd, and want to go in a straight line, and want to stay stick (which i would recommend hands down cause autos suck!!) then id just look into a built t45. or wait, you might have the 3650. i think you do. if your looking to keep it at that range hp wise, which is where i wanna be, and see little track time thats probably the most affordable option. it wont take much extra to make it built if your actually having to replace the transmission. if you dont mind spending the extra for the conversion (cause it is gonna be a bit more to do it for sure with different length drive shaft and sensors and bellhousing) and want that "funness" of a 6 speed then i d say the t56 is cool. i almost went that route before mine blew unexpectedly. but again, the conversion costs are to be taken into account. it will be easily over 2k and more like a little under 3k total for the tranny and the stuff needed to make the conversion. its mainly about what you really want, and how mush your willing to spend.
but as an affordable solution to making sure ur tranny never blows again and takes all the abuse you can throw at it, get a mildly built version of your stocker. talk to wally or walt at pro motion transmission and they will tell you everything you need to know.
