Default 1997 why is my mustang shifting hard in 2nd gear?

I have just bough a 97 mustang and when it shifts from 1st to 2nd it slams together really hard. I really need to know if it is suppose to do this, and if so what makes it do this. It is an automatic.

Welcome aboard... Have you checked the fluid levels?

Check the fluid level, make sure its not too high or low (high is just as bad as low, sometimes worse, it doesn't smell burnt, and looks the right color. A fluid change may be a good idea as well. Check that and post up the results, we can go from there if it doesn't solve the problem.

If it still does it after getting the fluid to the proper level, the lower 1-2 accumulator spring could be broken. It's a common problem in 4R70Ws, but the good news is that in the J-Mod, you don't even use the 1-2 lower spring to firm up the shifts.

+1. Happens to the 4R70w. I think they fixed it in 98, but the 97 should still have the issue.
