I have a n/a 2000 gt 5/speed with Magnaflow Catted x & Magnaflow Cat-back. I want to put headers on. What style of header's would bolt right up to my Magna X pipe ? (shorty's,mid's or Long tube) Would I loose low end torque ? I was thinking FRPP shorty's might bolt right up since my Magna stuff is in the factory position.
I might go s/c in spring, but not quit sure yet. My other mod's are in the sig.
Thank's
Fall

if you've got the loot, I'd say go for the bassani optimum length headers. They are supposed to make amazing, emissions legal power. Thats what I'm saving for. And you will lose a little low end torque, but your 3.73's should make up for that.

Unfortunately you wouldn't be able to go with long tubes unless you had them seriously cut/adjust your mid-pipe. However, the LT's would still pass the emissions aspect of the smog check, but would fail a visual. It is a lot easier though to find someone who will visually pass a car than emissions wise pass one. I know that Magnaflow does make a shorty X-pipe for LT's though. BBK has great LT's for only $499, but if you really want the best get Hookers for $699. I'm sure Bassani's are great but mid's can never come close to LT's. If you do want the whole setup to be visually legal, definitely go with the Bassani's.

But which one's will bolt up and match to my Catted X pipe ? The set up should be the same as stock as far as matching them up. If I would by long's , short's or mid's. How can I tell what would work ? I'm not really worried about the $$ ,I would rather do it right the first time.
I don't want to cut my X pipe. It's got to match up without fabrication.
Are headers Illegal ? Or don't pass emission's. I'm missing something here.Explain the difference between long's , mid's & shorty's. Is'nt it how far the pipe's come down or what am I missing.

I asked the same question once. heres what I remember:
shorties - bolt up to factory pipes, not much power gains
mid - bolt up to factory pipes, better power gains than shorties
long tubes - require special x/h pipe, best power gains. they don't necessarily ensure that you'll fail emissions, because you can get a special made catted x or h pipe.
the bassani optimum lengths should bolt up to your x-pipe without any modification. I'm not sure how they designed it, but those headers allow for a high amount of scavenging while still allowing the retention of factory fittings. they are your best bet for getting the most power gains given your exhaust system...........ummmm. sorry if I droned on. and someone please correct me if I've made a mistake here.

Go to Http://www.vetteguru.com he is a corvette guy. He knows alot about cars in general and has a topic about HEADER TECHNOLOGY I learned alot from it, I also learned alot from his EEC topic. Go look, it explains the differences and pros and cons of shortys, equal lengths, unequal lengths, and long tubes. Trust me he knows what he is talking about and has a very nice corvette that he has worked on.
Listen Long tube headers are great and all that but 1) They are a pain in the butt to install. 2) If you need to do any tranny work, like pull it out forget it, headers have to come out first. 3) If in any case you have to pull the engine, you'll need to take them off the same way they went on unless you want to fight the engine pull the whole way and risk damaging something. Trust me I did this the other night. NIGHTMARE and a HALF. I had to use a engine hoist a come along and the winch from my rubicon to get the engine and tranny out in one shot and a broke ome stuff doing it, minor parts. Go with the shorties. That way all you have to do is drop the H Pipe and eveything is free and clear.

From everything that I've read about unmodified 4.6's ( blower or juice) , headers of any type are not worth the cost and trouble it takes to install them. High flow cats and a good cat back system offer more bang for the buck than headers according to what I've read.
