Question Motor oil 5W-30 or 5W-20??? Please help...

Okay so I am doing my first oil change on my 2000 GT since I purchased it, little over 3k miles. So I go to the store, whip out the owners manual go to page 191 (capacities and specifications) to get the filter number and oil weight. On the page it says 5W-30 I buy said filter and Mobil 1 5W-30 oil. Fast forward 1/2 hour drain oil, install new filter and go to fill w/new oil...oil cap says 5W-20 What the hell...Question can I use the 5W-30 I bought, its only marginally thicker than the 20 but, the cold weather is here now. Granted my MGT will only see a few more weeks of the road I just want to be sure. Whats the deal w/the 2 different weights (manual/oil cap)? Any help would be appreciated.

Hank

I think Ford first switched to the 5w-20 recommendation in the 2001 model year. Prior to that the reocmmended oil was 5w-30. The 5w component of the oil is the same in either of the formulas. Both will flow at the 5w rate on initial cold start-up. If it stays real cold, I doubt the oil will ever thicken to the 30 weight rating.
