Question 96-98 or 99-04 GT Engine Swap

I currently have a `95 3.8L Mustang . I want to put in a 4.6L but I don't know if I should put in the 96-98 4.6L or the 99-04. What is the difference between the two engines? I read that the 99-04 makes about 45 more horsepower stock. An additonal stupid question I have is what are PI heads? I keep reading about them. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

Cool

About time to upgrade the powerplant, huh?

Well, having a 95 can complicant things a little because the modular set-up is different from the 5.0L GTs of the same year.

I haven't done any 5.0L swap into the 94-95 body style but I would imagine you would better served to look at a 5.0L swap instead of a 4.6L. The biggest benefit would be the wide assortment of aftermarket parts for the 5.0L.

I'm not trying to dissuade you but it might be cheaper and easier, relatively speaking, to go back to the ol' 5 Oh!

PI - Power improvement; better flowing heads that made more power. The 45hp difference is due to the heads and cams. FORD got it right by 99.

I was thinking about the 5.0, but I was wondering about doing the 4.6L. I'll probably end up sticking with the 5.0 idea just because it will fit better. What I save by going with the 5.0, I'll just apply towards performace parts for it!! .

Thanks for the help!!!

oh yeah

My vote is for the 5.0; stuff is much cheaper.

I'm back - 2001 Cobra convertible, 84K miles, acquired 12/10/11; just beginning to figure out what it needs to be right (beyond the leaky top..) - top to be done 12/27. Changed the coolant, trans. fluid, oil, differential fluid. Replaced the LF wheel hub assy. Ordered a pair of Blisteins for the rear. Next up: full-length subs, strut brace, stainless brake hoses F&R and a bunch of FatMat.

PI Heads

Smoke said heads/cams; its heads/cams/intake manifold - big difference in manifolds; I'd go 5.0

Five_Oh or Mod Motor

Since he has 95 car, everything he needs to swap to 5.0 is a) factory engineered, b) smog-legal?, c) prolly avail in significant quantiy in bone yard. Please document journey via pics, etc. Would be a great magazine story.

dont forget if you are gonna do this swap there is more to worry about then just the engine. You will have to upgrade your suspension, rear axle (you will need an 8.8 or 9), new springs, etc... so dont foget about that stuff either.

swap stuff

yes, unless you just want a project (true hot-rodding), you'd have to consider just buying a V8 car. It's a relatively easy project but lots of time running around collecting/cleaning, etc. the parts you need.

True, if i had to do it all over again i would of gone with a 94-95 5.0. You just can't beat the aftermarket of the five oh, so many more parts and much cheaper.

i am working on getting all the parts for my swap. Instead of trying to save up all at once i am gonna get small parts as i get money. So i will get heads, ten intake, then cams, gaskets, etc... then when i can afford to have it installed i will. The pi swap should really wake up my car. And the other cool thing is with the swap i will be able to beat 99+ stang which already have pi heads since the larger combustion chambers in the 96-98 will make my compression higher. I will also have to run 93 octane but i guess that is a small price to pay for 60 hp.

BTW: i didnt mean to hijack the thread, sorry
