Default more engine swap questions

Looking into a dohc engine swap into my 97 gt. Will i need a new trans? New exhaust? Is there a list of everything that i will need so i can see if its cost effective to swap my motor. If i swap my motor what could i sell my 97 gt's motor with 48,500 miles on it for? Any links or information about the swap or anything related will be a great help in this matter.

well, considering that the SOHC and the DOHC both use the same tranny, i'd say that that should be ok to hold onto, might need a new clutch though, me, i'd go ahead and do a T56 at the same time

new harness prolly
since the heads are different, it makes sense that the exhaust would be different

as for cost effective, it really depends on what you want to do, the DOHC just plain flows better than the SOHC, so it'll respond better to mods

well it doesnt matter to me how i get to 300+rwhp but thats what i want. looked into a supercharger doesnt get me to 300+rwhp and PI heads, intake and cams doesnt either. I know that a cobra engine wouldnt get me 300 to the wheels but i can easily mod to get me there. I was hoping that if i get a used engine and sell mine i could do the hole swap for under 2000 if i did all the work myself.

Well you can get over 300 hp to the tires for cheaper than a DOHC.

P&P PI heads decent cams, long tube headers, upper plenum and a good tune will get you at least 300.

If you really need the DOHC you will need the following.
Cobra wiring harness and computer and exhaust manifolds as well as midpipe.
There are some other parts needed but either way you arent going to get the parts and get it done for under 2k.

Nope.

If it is newer it will have PI heads but it wont be a DOHC.

To tell you the truth man I have no idea on the cost of a good P&P job. Just search modulardepot.com to get an idea on pricing or somebody here might know.

Your best bet is to get a 99+ motor used or out of a wrecked car and a procharger. my friend did that and got 450 rwhp

I hope he has deep pockets the stock internals tend to let go around 400 hp at the crank.

Actually the choice is yours and it all depends on how much cash you have to spend. Lately the most cost effective thing to do for NA with our cars is to just put a PI intake and PI cams in on the non PI heads. The downside is you wont get 300rwhp but the positive side is it is cheap. Look at my sig all I did is take my non PI shortblock and bolt on stock PI heads, cams and intake and tuned it. Now next winter I probably wont get the P&P treatment but long tubes and cams will go in. I only have 350 invested in the upper half of my engine and I now have a totally different car. you have a low mileage shortblock use it to your advantage.

why not get a 96-98 cobra motor which is dohc. All you would need to do is change the harness and thats it. Right off the bat you would have 305 to the crank. Then work from there.
