Default Axle or bearing noise

Hi,

Has anyone come across this before?

I drove 200 miles down the freeway in the morning and as I was driving back this noise started. Its like a winning sound that stays constant with the speed you are travelling. So I start off and it starts to get louder the faster I go.

I had a new Axle seal and fluid change a few months back I managed to get under the car to check if this was the problem. But its still sealed and there is full fluid in the axle. So I guess it is either a bearing problem it something else. I don’t think it is a ceased brake or anything as it drives ok.

what do you think I should check for? I haven’t got as far as seeing what condition the bearings are in but both back wheel hubs turn free in the capilars with little resistance.

I have this feeling that the bearings are starting to go. if the axle seal went bad it could have caused damage to the bearings, and in due time they will fail too. Looks like you are now starting to hear the beginning of them failing.

Hi, Thanks for replying. I suspected this but wasn’t sure. Now one thing you may know. Are we talking about the bearings for the wheels near the prop shafts or is there some other bearings buried near the differential?

have you changed all bearings, seals, shims before? How many miles does your car have now? Are you having any drivetrain vibrations? Is it just a whinning noise when traveling at any speed or rpm?

Thumbs up re:

Hi,

Its done 72000 miles there is no vibration from drivetrain. The axle seal and oil was replace by a shop for it’s MOT and they didn’t find anything else out of the ordinary. I am going to order a pair of bearings and have them fitted. I will let you know if it solves the problem.

Thanks to you guys for your assistants.
