Default Is the K&N air filter worth the money?

Hey guys!!!!! I was just wondering.....Should I install a K & N Filter on my '02 Mustang GT. I 've heard a lot of people say that it's not worth the $40 because it just won't make a noticable difference. But then, I've also heard a couple of people that drive Camaros say that it made a big difference. What do you guys think? Is it worth it?

you can justify the $40 just because you clean it and reuse it, unlike a standard paper filter which you just toss out. every vehicle I've ever installed them in has been worth it in my opinion. gas milage gets a little better and throttle response is improved also.

Get the K&N FIPK... You'll notice a difference then. You will get about 10 RWHP from it... That's no BS

Go to Autozone and pick any K&N filter from the shelf. Hold it up to the light and look at all of the holes in the cotton fabric. A $40 rock strainer. The one or two HP that you pick up is not worth the extra crap that they let into your engine. Stick with a good quality paper filter and change it often. I had a K&N on a throttle body injected 4.3 liter S-15 Jimmy. Ran it for a week or so and took the filter cover off and was surprised to see a thin film of oil on the base plate of air cleaner housing and dirt trapped in the oil film on the injector side of the filter. The filter was letting a lot of sand through it. I removed the K&N forever and went back to paper. PS. I did the same thing with new Fran Air Hog. Held up to the light. Holes in the cotton fabric. Crap in your engine. 1 or 2 hp ain't worth it.

1 or 2 hp? my cai gives 9rwhp and the k&n cai claims about the same. those paper filters are choking your engine.

I'm talking about the drop- in filter not the cai system. The 9 hp isn't worth the additional crap a K&N lets into your engine. Hold it up to light and look at the holes in the fabric. Wish the heck someone would make a CAI system with a paper filter. I'd buy one then

GTron I can honestly say I have never seen anyone report those kinds of problems being directly related to a K&N air filter. I hate that it happened to you but do you have more examples of other engine failures related to the K&N, from anyone? The board membership should be informed if there is a problem with these filters. Its just that this has NEVER come up as an issue to my knowledge. The only complaint I have ever heard about them is that sometimes the driver will put to much oil on them and they will foul the MAF sensor.

I don't know of any catastophic engine failures, but judging from the amount dirt that had gotten past theK&N filter in the S-15 Jimmy that I had, one would assume that the life of a K&N filtered engine vs a quality paper filtered engine would be less. If these types filters were so effecient at keeping dirt out and increasing HP and mileage, one would assume that auto makers would install them as OEM. They don't.
