I have recently aquired a set of reground Crane cams for my mid-life crisis. The lift on these puppies is .560 intake and exhaust. My question is what type of vavle springs do I need to go with these on NON-PI heads. The heads that they are going on are a set of P&P non-PI head that have PI valves installed in them. These were done in about 2000 by a professional head shop before the PI heads were readily available, and the cams were purchased a few years later but never installed. I know Comp Cams, Crane, Crower, and Mod Max all make springs.....but which part # do I need? There are rumors that ModMax have a habit of breaking after a while of high lift use. All comments and suggestions are welcome.
Uh, David.. you have WAY too many toys in your car already! Isn't it great!
On the springs - just call Comp on Monday?

NEVER TOO MANY ADD ONS! I will call soon. Just wanted other peoples expierience with springs before making my final decison. There is a lot of knowledge on this site.
Dave I think Comp Cams will answer your question for you pretty easily. I just recently aquired (sort of, he is holding them till pay day) a set of (badly, read: started and did not finish fully? left rough) ported PI heads and am in the process gathering the remaining parts for the swap. I am going to get some new VT Stage 2 cams, Comp springs, followers, and maybe lash adjusters. I dont know what all I will need but I have the full list of all parts needed for the swap...well see.

.560" is too much lift for the Non-PI heads. Spring retainer will hit the guide boss.
Sorry I have been busy. Johny Langton told me to cut down the guides also. Not a problem. Then the Comp
Cam springs will work perfectly. I wont get time to install until this semester is over. Simply no time to spare. But come summer time......Watch OUT! Thanks for the support.
David - did you see the MM&FF article last year about Livernois and the non-PI heads? claimed they respond pretty well to porting and the use of PI valves; see if I can dig it up. And, did you use somebody's kit to relocate battery to trunk (have Pics?)

:thumbsup
I did not see the article on the ported non-pi heads. Johny Langton over at Stangnet has proven they will perform. I am looking for some valve springs though. I cannot afford the almost $200 for them right at the moment. My new engine is being built on the cheap. All of the help you guys are providing is worth a fortune though. Thanks David
:thumbsup
P.S. The battery relocation kit is a taylor unit picked up at a swap meet for $100. Well worth the money.
have brand new PI springs/valves if that would help though w/that lift ??
I'll find that article.

Thanks for the offer on PI springs but these cams have a .565 lift. These are crane regrinds. An identical set made 275+ on a chassis dyno in a 2001 GT with fewer mods.
David - the article about the NPI head mods is in 5.0 Mustangs, June 2004, pp. 71-76. Can scan at work for you if want. Basically a Livernois-based article, stock NPI motor makes 237hp & 318tq (engine dyno). Modded heads, Livernois cams, and PI intake via their adaptors makes 335.8hp & 335.2tq. Heads utilize PI intake valves and stock exhaust valves.

Here's the article: you'll need to RENAME it; the file is a PDF file and needs the extension to be ".pdf"
