Well, I'm new here, so I'll give a quick run-down...
I brilliantly let the oil run low in my '97 Cobra...& started hearing a ticking noise toward the bottom rear of the engine. Without money to have it looked at (or another car to drive), I got an oil change & kept driving it, knowing SOMEthing was impending. Took it to a shop, the guy listened & said "It's the engine." Took it to a muffler shop to lift it & see exACTly where the noise was coming from, & a guy pointed me to right behind the trans bellhousing...voila, there's the noise from inside the trans...so I thought. After a couple more weeks, the engine suddenly starts dropping oil pressure at highway speed, starts trying to cut off. When I restarted it (1st gear with the clutch out), it would pull as if the clutch weren't disengaging, & rattling. Took it back to the same "shop," without tearing it down, the guy said "You need a new motor." Let it sit for a month, started it today, rattled as it turned over, then just knocked while idling. I revved it to 3K, the knock didn't speed up, just stayed at the same pace. Idled with no problem aside from the knock, exhaust still sounded the same as ever.
Anyone ever been through this before? And, if I AM looking at the engine (I'm sure wishing on the trans is empty hope), is it reparrable without buying a new one? Where are some decent shops that do DOHC's in Chicago?
Sounds like it is coming somewhere with in the clutch or the bell housing. Or you could have a bad rear main oil seal that might be getting the clutch wet therefore loss of oil pressure and the clutch not wanting the disengage. Just an idea I would have to look at it to see if that was the problem. But I don't think it is a major engine problem. Most shops out there are out to make money because most people don't know how to work on their cars. Maybe you will get some more posts on this with someone who has had the same problem.

Sounds like main or rod bearings to me. I wouldnt drive it all especially if ur loosing oil psi. this will just cause more damage than what u have now
As for shops i know of one south of you here ya go

Keep running the car... The same thing happened to my friends truck it had no oil, and soon as he drove it to the shop to find out how much it would cost ...it stopped ..the mechanic said its probably from the oil not getting circulated throught the motor ..you may have oil psi but you need to drive it around , not hard..slowly dont go over 45mph..or will have a big problem this will get the oil up to the lifters and into the bearings etc...next time check the oil...
P.S. the oil pump probably just hasnt picked up the oil yet you may have to slowly rev the motor until it gets to the pump..Dont over fill either
You might want to try adding a bottle of "Marvel Mystery Oil". It seems to get into all the spaces in the engine. Do not drive it along distance but make sure the motor has had a chance to warm up. Check the level and listen for the knock.
with the knocking sound, it sounds like something not good, since it has to do with oil.. there is a good chance you spun a main bearing.. does it make the noise with the tranny in any gear?? clutch in our out??
if so, its not good.
i agree with modmadness01, make SURE there is oil in it, and run it for a little while.. when the oil pressure comes up, the sound should change a bit.. hopefully the noise gets quieter, or goes away. either way, i'm sure some damage was done to the motor.

If indeed you will have to get the motor rebuilt try running it, but put some Lucas oil treatment in it first.. the stuff is like syrup and should quiet any noises.. it works great, and will tell you the severity. under no circumstances drive it hard or fast during this time...
