Fabric and lube I use an unusual product to lube my convt top when the joints get creaky. As an artist and picture framer, I cut my own mat boards and the mat cutter company sells a nice silicone-based lubricant. Unless you go crazy with it you won't stain your top and it lasts for about a year between applications (in my case - at least). The product might be hard to find, but its called "Easy Glide". I've checked but its not to be found except from picture frame suppliers who won't sell to general public. I'd think that if anyone needs it, they could purchase it through their local picture frame shop - probably run you about $10.
I also use it on door locks. I've also used some of the regular silicone sprays, and they work almost as well, although not as long.
I would avoid using conventional oils so close to the fabric top, since this would be likely to migrate to the fabric and make a permanent stain. Too much oil would also tend to attract dirt, which causes wear in the joints, etc.
The other reason for slow operation would be a weak battery, particularly if you usually put the top up and down with the motor off.
hope this helps -
