This is not a plan just a thought. Is it possible to switch an auto to a 5 speed. I'm sure if it is, it's really expensive but could someone verify this for me. All I want to know is if it's possible, how much it costs, and if there are any dissadvantages/problems.
Around $1700+, you of course need a T45 or T3650, clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing, T.O. Bearing, fork, clutch cable, pedals, 5 speed computer (or chip) and 5 speed tranny harness.
Some vendors sell USED or NEW kits (might not include computer or harness).

You can't forget about the modifications that will need to be done to the cabin.....new pedal assy, new center console, new floor cover, all obtained from the junk yard from some poor slob's mangled wreck. Who's torching the holes in the firewall, and for what price?
Anything is possible, not all things are worth doing.
Buying what you really want the first time is the best route. If you can't afford to, then maybe you should revise your goals. Tradin' in is the next best option. 'Course you never get back that depreciation expense.

i am presently in the middle of doing this myself. i have a 2001 GT and am slowly morphing it into a BULLITT. the brakes, shocks, springs, struts, swaybars, intake manifold, speedo, mufflers/pipes, seats, skirts, c-pillars, rear 1/4 glass, sidescoops are done. i chose the Tremec 3650 and as the other reply stated, you do need a lot of stuff to swap from an AOD to MAN. check out www.2kgt.com. chad has done an excellent job of documenting work. i refer to his website first for any questions. he also has a connect to another site for setting up the clutch safety connect and the cruise control connect under the dash. other than the obvious stuff you need, there is only one OPTION question, well, actually three, when you decide to do this: what type of flywheel do you want: 6 bolt or 4 bolt, steel or aluminum, and size of clutch: 11" or 10.5"?? if you have the time and $$, do it! enjoy yourself!
I'm back - 2002 GT Convertible, auto: Continental Extreme Contacts, KYB GR-2 shocks/struts, Ford Racing "G" springs, Maximum Motorsports camber plates, 3 pc grill delete, Mach I chin spoiler.
