Default Door Squeaking Problem PLEASE HELP IT'S ANNOYING

All,

I have a 96 GT Vert. and when I am going over bumpy roads both doors ( or it sounds like the doors ) squeak something fierce. How can I correct that problem?

Also on my passanger door jam near the top back part where the windows meet the door there is a rubber piece that is worn out it has a couple push pins or whatever in there that have pulled through and doesn't hold very well. Where can I get a fix for this or replacement piece?

Thanks in advance for all your help

Try www.50resto.com. I know they carry a lot of replacement convertible and t-top parts. I don't know how their inventory is for newer model cars, but they have an extensive supply of 87 and older parts.

I drive an 02 GT vert. - and these cars need all the help they can get with their lack of unibody stiffness. My car has Steeda subframe connectors and strut tower brace, and this will help the problem (G-trac kit from Steeda incl. caster/camber plates, brace, sub-frame connectors, etc. costs about $400 - from memory, so check out www.steeda.com). You car is flexing too much, and this can cause problems. Big problems. Greasing up your door hinges and latches might help, but the source of the problem is the unibody moving around in an un-natural manner. The torque boxes (spot welded sections in the rear end where the upper control arms are mounted) can also start to come loose.

Another problem may well be your doors, which some among us use as pry bars to lever our fat asses out of our cars, hence destroying the hinges (I weigh 250#, so I resemble this remark). If it feels like you have to lift the doors to keep them from crashing into the body when you close 'em, you may need new hinges. This will NOT fix the unibody problem of course - but it may happen as a RESULT of the flexing getting out of hand.

Good luck with this - the subframe connectors should be welded in, my the way.

www.mustangsunlimited.com is another source for convertible parts. They have stores in Georgia and the northeast. Prices are only fair, but selection is wide (although their web site is antiquated - probably have to call).

I do have sub frame connectors and alike. Would bad swaybar bushings or something like that cause the problem in the door? The doors close strait.

Bad sway bar bushings won't cause the doors to squeak and rattle, but they can squeak on their own. Try getting some white lithium grease in a spray can with a small applicator and working some in between the bushings and the bar. That may work if those are the problem. One more thing we can do to stiffen up the unibody is to have the torque boxes completely welded. The spot welds that are done from the factory are sufficient, but there's lots of room for improvement.

If the noise is not your door hinges, the next item located in a direct line from the hinges to your ears are the struts, followed by the front suspension (sway bar, sway bar links, steering rack, tie rod ends, upper control arms, lower control arms, etc.). If you've got a lot of miles on the car and the original struts are still in use, they may be the source, as might any number of rubber bushings.

The suggestion about spraying in some grease is good and cheap, but if the hardware is worn out, this will only mask the noise for a little while, if at all.

If your car is lowered 2" or more, it may be putting stress and/or bumpsteer forces on the front suspension, particularly the stock tie rod ends. Steeda makes an excellent bumpsteer kit for these cars - but get an expert suspension exam before pulling the trigger on replacing parts.
