Default Help Please! Starter Problem with my 2000 Mustang

Anybody have advice for 2000 Mustang where battery is good and starter simply does not engage - no noise, nothing? Possible the software chip is bad in the key?

Does the car make any noise like a clicking sound when you turn on the key? Does the ignition still have the set positions like on and start so that the radio or lights would turn on?

Make sure all your wires are good, ive seen the power wires burn out on a few cars and there was no power being supplied to the starter, ive also seen a hondas starter break and just be laying under the hood that also made no noise because iot wasnt even "installed", but first ive seen a few cars have just a flat spot and hitting it with a hammer a few times has knocked it off the flat spot, id try that first just because its probably the easiest thing to do.... if all that is good is your fuseable lik good? or maybe your starter relay? or even just a fuse, tons of stuff it could be but there is something to go on... good luck man

another thing i can say to try... if you know what your doing is run a jumper wire to the power prong on the starter see if that starts the car, and have you just tried to jump it just incase its the battery... alot of times a battery will run the lights and battery but not have enough juice to pop the selonoid in the starter

don't ever hit a starter with a hammer. you'll make it a bad starter for sure that way. check the fusable link and fuses first. and make sure the neutral start switch or clutch safety switch is good also. if you think the starter is on a flat spot, get a socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt with a breaker bar and rotate the motor just a few degrees by hand. but for the love of muscle cars, don't hit it with a hammer.

Default Tow switch?

My 96 Taurus has a switch that activated when the car was jacked up or tapped hard in the rear end. Wouldn't start until the switch was reset. If the 2000 stang has this (? ignorant here -not sure if it does or not), check it.

Other advice is good - battery, terminals, fuseable link, fuses (remember the big one), and try the other key (you do have a second key, right?). Getting cute with the wiring harness bypass could be hazardous with these new cars - lots of delicate little computer brains you can fry - I'd leave this sort of experiment to the very experienced...

maybe i should have used the word tap it with a hammer or some form of object that gives you more force than your teeny tiny hand........ yes if you beat the bejeezus out of your starter with a hammer then you can break it.... a few taps wont hurt it..... done it more times that i can remember...... and works quite well..... i wouldent tell you to do something taht i wouldent do to my car take that how you want but i love my carat any rate good luck with your car

The switch that was on your Taurus was an inertia switch that cut power to the fuel pump. Those don't do anything to the starter at all.
