Defroster issue

OK here's one for you all. (1999 Mustang GT) When you turn your defroster on, the A/C compressor engages and cycles while in defroster mode. I would like to disable this and have my compressor only run when I switch on the A/C using the A/C switch.
I know the compressor disengages on WOT but I don't want the drag on the engine and I am looking to increase mileage while just cruising as well.
Any ideas anyone?

While I would agree that it would be better to have more control on when the AC goes on, there are times when you do need to have AC directed on the windshield to clear it. Lack of AC for defrosting could create a hazardous condition.
