I'm of the opinion that every dark cloud has a silver lining - ie, every bit of bad luck is an opportunity to spend silver...
Er, that didn't quite turn out right...
With the motor sitting on the floor, time for either an overhaul or a crate engine. If you know how to do it, you have lots of choices as to type/grade of overhaul. If you're not a good mechanic, buy a crate engine and have done with it!
DSS has some really nice pieces, whether you go with a short block, long block or overhaul kit. Coast Performance does too.
If it were mine, I'd put a 5.0 stroker short block with forged parts and a main support in there. I'd put in a nice Comp Cam kit (they make a complete line from mild to wild - you pick the profile - I tend toward the "medium wild" loping idle myself) with new springs and retainers (titanium if you go "wild"). I'd take my heads to a good cnc operator and get a 5 angle valve job with some hand-smoothing, and have them do the assembly and make sure all the valves are good.
If I could find one at a good price, I might consider a low-mile 4v motor, but remember you're going to need all the accessories, harness and computer to go with it (these are actually rather hard to find here in Georgia, probably due to popularity). No denying those cobra motors are cool...
A lot depends on budget. If you've got low dollars to spend, buy a stock overhaul kit and do it yourself - if the block is salvagable, you can get by with a small investment in money and a big investment in time - find a good/reasonable machine shop and you're on your way. With more money comes more choices, of course, with better parts, better future performance, etc, etc.
Before you dive in, figure out the money side. Nothing worse than getting half way through a build and running out of funds...
Let us know how it goes.

Now when you are under the hood and rev the engine with the TB it sounds more like a back pressure popping noise possibly coming from the passenger or Driver back cylinder area. It's too hard to tell exactly where it's coming from, but it doesn't sound anything like metal fatigue or a knock. I took it to one mechanic who said "the main bearing in the crank was bad.. park it and don't drive it... " He said this after test driving it for about 2 minutes... I then took it to a friend who said tighten your spark plugs... I replaced them and made sure they were in right... still there... I took the car to Jiffy lube and just for the hell of it, had them throw in this oil stuff for older engines with knocking or pinging and it lowered the noise level inside the car, but it is still the same when under the hood. I then took it to Ford and showed them the noise. The Service Manager said "oh your rods bent, replace the engine". He also suggested possible piston slap... Another Mechanic friend of mine suggested wrist pins went bad... Anyways I think you get a god idea of what my problem is... I am torn between spending the money to replace the motor or take the motor apart and find out whats wrong with it. My curiosity wants to at least find a damaged engine component. The motor is currently out of the car and sitting in my garage... Has anyone else ever experienced a similar problem??? what was the cause??? Solution??? Thank you for any insight... |
