GTs come with 17" x 8" wheels. P245/45ZR17 are the stock size. The most popular Cobra wheels (Cobra R, 99 Cobra, etc) are 17" x 9". The '95 Cobra R's stock size was P255/45R17. The wider the tire is not always better because if its too wide then the tire can move in hard corners. This is a hard concept to explain in words but I would just go with a tire that is flush with the wheel weight lip on the wheel. This is usually the best and a tire that is too wide doesnt look good either.

Stock 96-02 GT's w/ 17's have a 17x8, stock 94-01 Cobras have a 17x8 as well. Now the aftermarket you can get both 17x8 or higher.
I would not suggest putting a 275 tire on a 17x8 unless the tire is designed for handling. I have 275/40/17 G force on my stock rims, and they are fine. Going wider does not always mean you will get more traction.
I would go with a 9 inch for the front with 275's, and for the back try to get at least a 10-11.5 inch and put 315's on it. This combo looks great, is flush with the fenders, and grips the road very well. It is an expensive set up tho. If you can't afford it go with the 9x18's with 275's all the way around.
Saleen runs a 265 -35 -18 for the fronts on a 18" x 9" wheel. 295 - 35 -18 tire on the rear with a 10" wheel. This combo fits nice, not too wide. If you go any larger with some tailpipes you may need a spacer depending on the offset of the wheel. Ask the manufacturer of the wheel you are considering. They should know best. 18's are nice good luck.
Before you buy the Kumos check out my sig. I just returned a set of Kumo's and traded them in on a set of Nitto's.
I know that some people live and die by this brand especially for the price, but, in my case I got what I paid for. The tires I got were not round. 10 miles after balance they were vibrating, rebalance...10 miles later vibrating, rebalance by different shop, same story. They were also stiff and unforgiving on rough roads, and poor in the wet. The Nitto's have a slightly softer sidewall (most likely at the cost of some ultimate dynamic handling characteristic), but are smoothe and I saw that they were all round when mounted up on the balancer. They are made by Toyo.
I personally have found that anything much wider than a 245 low profile on a Mustang front end causes wandering into the tire rutts in each lane causing the car to shoot from lane to lane as the tires climb over the sides of the rutts.
Those Steeda's are a real nice wheel!
Just thought that you might like to know...Regards TarPony

Well, I don't need to know how big of a tire I can fit, but how small. Call me crazy, ok, but I know a guy that has a set of 225_ _ 17's off of an Audi TT. Will these fit on my 17x8's that I have. I currently have 245 45 17 BFG's, but I can get this new set for $75. What do you guys think?

I believe that the 225 -55 -16 is the optional size that comes with the V-6 Mustangs (205 15's being the stock size) . According to tires.com the aspect profile is higher for the Mustang as the TT comes with a 45 series tire in the 17 inch size. All being said the TT tires will probably have an overall size smaller than you would want, and might not have the load rating that you need for your 4.6. It sounds like you would be getting a tire sized better for the Mustang V-6. Even at that price the tires are small for your use IMHO.....

I was just about ready to buy a set. Nothing makes me madder then tires that are always out of balance
I have set of Yokohoma's on my car now 245-45-17 , and I HATE these tires. They are the hardest dang tire I have ever owned, besides the last Yok's I have on my 94 Cobra.
I just want a smooth running tire, with not to stiff of a sidewall, and no more howling.
I am considering Nitto 550's or Sumitomo HTR Z's.

I really like the Nitto NR 555 Extreme's. The first time I had them out I found them to be a lot smoother because of the softer sidewall. You can see this for yourself at the tire store by grabbing the bead and tread between your palm and fingers and squeezing the sidewall. There is some give in the Nitto and absolutly none in the Khumo. The stiffness in the Khumo's probably makes for the ultimate in responsiveness but really detracts from ride. The Nitto's are also made in a segmented mold which I am told insures rounder more uniform tires (more expensive process). The Khumo's are not.
Looking at the residue from the stick on wheghts that it tool to balance the Khumo's (3 and 4 oz strips at a time), to the weights that are on the wheels now (.5 oz to 1 oz strips), it is obvious that the Nitto's are much rounder.
I know a lot of people have the Khumo's and read alot of reviews praising the tire, but it was not a good experience for me personally. I really like the Nitto's so far, had the car up a mountain canyon yesterday (Sunday) close to Denver, the thing drove like it was on velcro.
Hope that you get what you want out of what you buy....

Have any of you ever heard anything or delt with AFS wheels??? I am thinking about getting thier Silver Cobra R rims, 17 x 8 in front and
17 x 10.5 in the back wrapped with Nitto 555's on my 02 V6.

The biggest i have put on a 17*9" rim is a 275/45
I have seen a mustang with 17*10.5" with 315/?? rubbers
they were damn wide. That was a 98GT though i think
I have Kumho tires on my car and they were simple to balance. They are also really comfotable and quite.
The reason you may have had problems balancing your Kumho tires is that you have both the rim and tire heavy spot on the same side making it a ***** to balance.
