Default 2000 gt manual sticking in reverse

I have a 2000 GT Manual that sticks in reverse. I have to pop the clutch sometimes more than once to get it out. Its seems to be intermittent but happens more times than I'd like. I'm pretty sure at this point that my car was in an accident before I got it. So far Ive replaced the engine mounts and know the front end/suspension needs to be all replaced. Trying to get this car to daily driver status. Reverse is the next issue to be addressed. Any suggestions on the reverse issue?

yeah unfortunately it means the transmission needs a rebuild...a common problem...you might want to consider how much you want to spend on this rather than sell and buy something else...the cash burn can be substantial...a car can be financed and driven

Yeah I totally get that. Feeling like Johnny Cash on this, one piece at a time. I dont really want another car payment. This car was a long list of trades. Its still a fun car to drive. It just sucks getting stuck in reverse when you've run out of room or just parallel parked. Looking at used trannys now.

My 2000 GT with T45 has this exact problem. It's caused by an incorrectly shimmed shaft inside the T45. There's a Ford TSB regarding this.

I have learned to live with the issue. Several things I have learned.
  • Don't stop with it still in reverse.
  • Always leave room behind you to back up in case it does get stuck in reverse
  • Mine is easier to get out of gear while the car is still slowly moving. Apply light pressure to the gear shift and wait for it to easily come out while still moving.
  • if it won't go into reverse, bump the clutch or place the gear shift into another gear and then try again.
  • don't force it in or out of gear. It is possible to break the shift fork.

The condition is actually easy to fix. The bad news is the transmission will need to be pulled. Should you ever get your T45 overhauled, make sure they know about the reverse shaft alignment procedure.

Since I have learned to live with the problem, I never get stuck in reverse. It doesn't bother me enough to pull the transmission. Will just wait until the clutch wears out.

I do most of that when I remember to. I drive 4 different vehicles, so remembering that every time I get in the mustang can be an issue.

Side note getting a massive squealing now seems to be a bad bearing in the alternator. Looking at cheap ones on amazon thoughts on these Amazon.com: DB Electrical AFD0059 Ford Mustang 4.6L Alternator 99 00 01 02 03 04 8252: Automotive NEW FORD MUSTANG ALTERNATOR 4.6L 281ci V8 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 : Amazon.com : Automotive Bosch AL7534N New Alternator : Amazon.com : Automotive

Consider going the salvage yard route if $$ is tight. The 4.6 Mustang's alternator is stupid easy to change So no real downside should the replacement alternator turn out to have a short service life. My last salvage yard alternator cost $45 and lasted 4 years.

Try car-part.com for a searchable list of salvage yards in your area.

mine is so awful i can't pop it back out once it is stuck with rolling in reverse... SO the thing i learned to do *will work in paralell parking situation* is:

With the car OFF, just push the car forward a little bit and then go push on ur shifter, should pop right out. (unless of course ur on a hill and the car just rolled right back lol)

If $$ isn't an issue meaning, you plan to get a new tranny, Kiesler sells an amazing T45RS transmission with a 31 spline input shaft for i THINK only $1200! which, is a boat load of money for us common folk, but it's a great price for that much transmission

Just had to have my 2000 gt convertible done.
Was doing the same thing.
Cost about 2,000.
But the car shifts and drives much better now.
I had this happen just after I bought the car.
as not happy.

Good luck with yours.
