Default Gear in transmission for speedometer help

I have 4.10s in my car and my speedometer is 14 mph faster that what I am really going. I know a programmer will fix that but I am not spending my money on that becuase I cat afford to use premium all the time. I know there is a plastic gear that you can put in the tranny that runs the speedometer, but I dont know how big of a job it would be. The guy who helps me with all my mechanic stuff did it to his 95 Gt when he tore his tranny out. I was wondering if anybody knew anything about it and if they knew if I have to take the tranny out.

You can buy a programmer just to fix your speedo, I forget what it's called. Probably find it if you did a forum search.

Are you referring to the speedcal? Its like 80-100 bucks brand new i think and it fixes your speedometer much closer then that speedo gear. Those gears are thin plastic and have a habit of being eaten up. When i planned on getting gears (still do one day) i was going to get the speedcal for mine. You can also use it if u change rim size too!!:thumbsup

I forgot to say that with the gears my tripometer and odometer are also off. I took a trip that I know is 25 miles one way and I went there and back and it said I went 66 miles so I need to get it fixed quick. I think the speedcal will be better than messing with the tranny gear. What brands are out there and can it only be used on one car?

you dont need to take the tranny out to put in the new gear, the gear is about 30 bucks and you will need a 23 tooth gear ( im pretty sure), ford doesnt make it so you will have to go aftermarket. it takes about 10 mins to put it in

Correct but the speedcal is the better option, imo.

yes. buy it if you cant afford a programmer like a xcal2. In my opinion you'd be better off buying the programmer...it's like 300 dollars more but WAY worth it.
