What is the BEST oil I can use in my 2006 Mustang?
hi
soon my 06 will need its first oil change,,was wondering whats the best oil to use?? of course when you ask your dealer they tell ya use nothing but 5-20 ford semi-syn. is anything better?? i want the best oil, dont care about cost,, ford is around 350-375 a quart. let me know what you run. thanks jj
seems like politics/religion/oil types all can lead to arguements...
I dont know whats best, dont pretend to, BUT-
I dont baby my car, I have fun with it(but never hit >6k) but if something happens to go wrong I definitely dont want the old 'you used wrong oil' warranty arguement. I changed mine at 3K w recommended motorcraft 5w20 semi syn, just to avoid the possibility. I figure changing at 3 still a safer way to go, to me if oil looks darker than it used to, its gotta have crap in it- no matter if its rated for 5k/100k/whatever...but the factory designed this little motor to make it thru warranty with likely lots of full throttle type abuse(probably higher than any other car on the road today) so I figure they know whats needed...I do think extended oil change intervals are 'planned obsolescence' things, they want to be sure it flys thru warranty period unscathed, but it dont help them if it lasts forever...if the oil starts getting too dark, its time to change in my opinion...
while on opinions- Ive got one I highly encourage others to consider:
One thing I LIKE about the mustang, you can prefill the filter about 2/3(let sit a few minutes and fill again- filter soaks up a BUNCH) of the way before installing, to cut down on that dreaded 'post oil change dry startup' till the filter gets pumped full- mine didnt tick/rattle at all, and the light went out in maybe a second, instead of the usual 3-5 seconds. My wifes van has a almost horizontal filter and it sounds like hell the first start after changing- CANNOT be good for the motor.

Id suggest using 5w-20 Royal Purple fully synthetic oil. This will not void your warrenty and it works great. It really feels a lot smoother in the higher RPMs. If your going to change the oil you might as well dish out the extra 30 bucks an oil change. If you cant find the oil at local stores, www.mustangtuning.com sells then for a resonable price. You'll be happy with this oil, its the best in my opinion.
Ford cannot kill a warranty simply for not using the recommended oil type. As long as you stick with the factory specified weight, you're fine. Full synthetics like Red Line and Royal Purple are without a doubt the best. The flip side of that is they are quite pricey. I use Castrol Syntec 95% of the time but the last oil change was Valvoline Full Synthetic simply because I couldn't find the Castrol. Use 5W-20 weight as stated by the maker and you're fine.

I'd agree to use the 5w-20 weight because the engine is designed for it. If you're going to beat on it a lot use synthetic. If you're going to drive mostly normally use semi syn or dino oil. I only put 3K miles a year on the car and I don't race it and rarely ever give it the gas ($3.16 a gallon) so I use dino or semi syn. My last car had 255K miles on it with Castrol GTX dino and 3.5K oil changes. Ran like a Swiss watch. Body rust got it.

thanks men!! just want to say i was at auto zone the other day and they had the same ford 5-20 at 2.69 a quart instead of 3.75 at the dealer!! guess where i will get my oil?
thanks jj
Yeah forget buying stuff at dealerships unless you know someone in the parts or service departments. It's outrageous. Auto Zone, Advance, O'Reilly's are going to be the best bets for good prices on maintenance parts and oil.
