Default KEY reprogramming?

Hello,

I was going apeSH** this morning trying to look for my car key for my 00' GT. I still have the spare key.

I still am unable to find the other key. I still have to check my room again later in the day when my head cools off.

I checked the forums for some answers, and may or may not have the answer I am looking for.

My question is, if I go to a FORD dealership to get new keys, can they program the new keys so that the transmitter of the old keys will not work with my car anymore?

My concern is, I may have dropped the key last night on the street where I live and someone may have picked it up and who knows, may take the car for a joy ride or something or worse steal it for good. I did go back and trace my steps and checked the street and was not lucky enough to find any key.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks.:thumbsup

I had a new key made at a Ford dealership and they told me that I needed the old key also so that they would be programmed to the same code

Yes they can reprogram the ECU to recognise a different key. It's not free and I'm not sure how much it will cost you. It can be done though.

Default The reason they want the original key...

Your Mustang can be programmed to accept up to 5 different key codes. The reason they want the original keys when they program is that it makes the operation simpler and quicker for them. You can program another key or fob to work with your car if you have 2 functional keys already. When you do that there is no need to flash the system. If you do not have 2 functional keys, then you have to flash the system and program all of the keys from scratch. This is a pain and it takes more time and equipment. If they flash your system as you do not have 2 keys, they will have to program the new key, as well as the one key you had with you when you came in, and all previous keys will automatically be rendered useless. If anyone ever tried to use it, your starter would crank, and nothing else would happen. If that happened, the next time you went to start your car, the CHECK ENGINE light would flash to let you know someone tried.
