My 97 Gt has a BBK CAI, i do not have the bypass valve to stop water, it has been raining alot here and i am getting scared of water getting up there. Am i worried for nothing? I have heard a few stories so i am just checking

Hydralocking is a real possibility in heavy water conditions. Rain is not usually the problem. Be careful about splashing through puddles.
Snake's right, but its not a problem with the normal CAI that has the filter intake mounted up as high or higher than the stock snorkel would have been. Some of the "ram air" designs that pickup from below the bumper would scare me.
Hydrolocking occurs when you suck up so much water that the motor can't compress it (air compresses, but water doesn't) and it can ruin a motor. Every time I've every seen it (only a few times in a very long time) it was because someone tried to drive their car through 2 or more feet of water. Bad idea. The ones that just shorted out their distributor were the lucky ones.
Normal rain should NOT be getting into your CAI. If you find the filter sitting in a pool of water, see that the drain is not blocked, plugged or missing. If you have one that sits on a pan witout a drain, drill a hole!

yep, just use caution when driving through puddles. i have a fenderwell and it sits about where the snorkle did.

When I used to be a ricer - I had a fenderwall CAI. During the hurricanes in 2004, my wife decided to drive the car threw a puddle that she described as it "enveloped the car with water when driving through it." (She also didnt describe this to me until after the hydrolocking)
Anywho she told me it just stalled, so I try to turn the car over and I hear a loud pop and look under my car to se a stream of oil flowing down the street. Got to claim it on my insurance though, that was the only cool thing about it, i got a new engine. This can happen and it sucks when it does. My advice is idle through any puddles of significance to keep the waves down and prevent water from getting into the engine.

Hey guys thanks for your help, this has worried me for a while, i am going to get the bypass valve as soon as possible. Where can i buy a bypass valve for a BBK CAI? And how much would it normally cost for it to get installed? I am going to do this as soon as possible, because i live in michigan and when it rains there are small floods all over the roads i drive on.

AEM makes bypass valves in different sizes, just do a search on ebay, google, etc. I think they cost like 40-60 dollars and just clamp onto your intake pipe wherever you want before the mass air sensor with hose clamps. I read about a test they ran in some ricer magazine where they hooked one of those bypass valves onto an NSX with cold air and literally diped the filter in water with the engine running at like 4000 rpm and the valve worked fine no hydrolocking. By the way a friend of mine from school drove his 4.6 t-bird (with cold air) through a deep puddle and hydrolocked his engine.

I have a standard BBK Cold Air intake, for my 97 Gt, i am not sure what size it is, to order the bypass valve they want the exact size. I think its 2.75, not sure though, anyone have some ideas???
