Default 97 Mustang GT Possible Tranny Problem

I'm experiencing a problem where every time I put it in reverse and then go back into drive, it either goes into neutral or it will rev to the top of 1st gear and go no further. I'm thinking it might be a problem with either the shifter (automatic) because it's real stiff or the tranny which i hadn't put fluid in it for a while and but i did when i noticed this problem and it's not going away.

the early model 4r70w's had a bad problem with the drum in the transmission. It's actually plastic and does the same thing when gone bad. Does it do it all the time? Also, if you manually shift it, can you get it to shift into 2nd or 3rd?

Yes, I experience this problem consistently. I also fell victim to another one of this model's faults.. I was one of the many that had their plastic (pos) intake manifold crack. I replaced that, now I have this other problem. I admit that I have abused the tranny in a way that when i'm backing up, when I go to put it back in forward, I don't wait until the car is completely stopped. I do step on the brake but I don't wait long enough. However, i've never heard any grinding or scraping from my tranny.

Better check your T/C too, a bad Torque Converter can cause all sorts of hell with your tranny.
