Last weekend I started a project to convert my '00 radio to the '04 model. I bought it the whole dash piece, shift bezel, and radio, but it turned out to be more work than I expected so I decided to put the stock stuff back in and save that project for another day.
When I put it all back together the speedometer didn't work. All the other guages work, the radio works fine, etc. If I go into the test mode (holding trip. button) the speedometer needle moves with the rest of the guages but doesn't do anything while driving---including rack up miles.
I checked all the fuses under the hood, and they're fine. I checked the power wire running into my Dallas SpeedCal and it's getting 12v. I'm thinking something must have touched and shorted out the unit though, even though it's getting power.
Is there any way to test the speedcal box before I drag it up to the dealer? Replacing the speedcal unit would be much cheaper than Ford.... Or what else should I check?
I don't mind the miles not racking up (just kidding) but I kind of need to know how fast I'm going! Thanks guys.

have you tried the diagnostic mode while driving to see if the mph was coming through you know what i mean? holding trip and starting the car and go to M and see what it says? also what about unplugging everything and starting from scratch like the battery for one and then the speedcal and the gauges and then just plugging in the gauges and then the battery and seeing what happens that might rule out the speedcal as being the problem? i don't really see anything shorting if you had the battery unplugged?? maybe so if the wires are exposed fromt he speedcal installation??? good luck let us know what you come up with????

The battery was not disconnected (I know...I know...) while I was playing mechanic. I didn't actually change any wires, just unplug and re-plug. I'll know better next time.
I did try the diognostic mode, but it showed 0 for the speed.
If I have time tomorrow I'll try to remove the SpeedCal all together and see if that fixes it. If it does, I at least know what the problem was. Hey, I wanted buy something for the stang anyway, I just wasn't planning on buying a duplicate part!

I'd go back into the dash, and spend a good long time with a flashlight, looking for any disconnected wires.
Maybe a single wire pulled loose of a connector, and is not completing its circuit.

Waiting to go on: Granatelli lower control arms, and GT40 Iron heads!
Mt guees would be a loose wire or a bad ground.
If that's not it, then I'd have to go with the Speedcal
