i love mine as well but I am wondering really how much is missing in the steeda short shifter from the tri-ax that a recreational driver who rarely really races track/street, would loose out on?
I say this because being a student, I wish that shifter was out about 2 years ago when I had mine becuase that 70$ could have gone toward something else.
ok, i know its a stupid question, but what exactly will a new shifter do for my car? i know that some of them are spring-loaded to help with the 2nd-3rd shift, but other than that? will it fix the looseness it has? by that i mean that before when it was in gear it would have very mininal side-to-side movement, and now you can move the shifter side-to-side when in gear, and i kinda dont like that. it used to be firm when shifting (the feel in the gear box) and now its kinda sluggish. any ideas?

The best Mom-lady I could have ever asked for
Oh im not proposing a new shifter, originally i just wanted to know what features caused the difference in price but then i thought anyone who babies thier stang doesnt really need the triax that much more than the steeda shifter
as for you looseness, mine also had alittle play in gear however, my stangs got 20k miles and its the same since day one! I would look further into that!!!! let me know if you figure anything out- maybe even start a thread

Shorter throw, tighter shift (more precise)

Once you get a new shifter your stock shifter will feel like you're rowing an axe handle through a tub of gummy bears. Short throws are one of the best feel mods you can make.

Absolutely. My MGW shifter shortened my 1st to 2nd gear "throw" from the stocker's 7 inches to about 3 inches. And that's with the "old" red-handled "Cruiser" style. The new Orange handle is even shorter, from what I understand.

At what point on the stick/shifter do you measure the length of the throw? I bought my car used with a few basic mods. I'm pretty sure my shifter is stock and I have been planning to eventually add a short-throw, but I don't think my first to second shift is anything like 7 inches. Now I want to measure the shift range and be sure, but I think it is much shorter than that - although my shifter definitely does not have the same kind of crisp, clean feel, nor shifts as short, I would expect from a short throw.

I concour. It also makes going into 2nd a much easier thing on certain model years. Its amazing that it can change the feel so dramatically.

From the top of the shifter handle -- where you would grab it. Yah, I was amazed that it was that long a throw too. I've got pictures somewhere with a ruler next to the shifter. If I can find 'em I'll post 'em up.
Edit: Found 'em. And I apparently mis-remembered the shifter throw distance. (senility is setting in.)
The original shifter throw from 1st to 2nd was 5.5 inches. After the MGW was installed it was 3.0 inches. The "feel" is a lot different -- it feels almost like flipping a toggle switch it's so precise -- you can literally feel it go "click-click" shifting from gear to gear.
Here's the pics, before and after.

Maybe it's just me...
I love my car...been talking about wanting a mustang since 12 and bought one at 26! The only thing I don't like is having to lean up and in to fully reach my shifter to palm it. I usually shift with my finger tips especially since I usually ride leaning slightly back, but have had a problem with it slipping out of gear with my lazy shifting.
Is there an after market shifter that not only short shifts but brings the shifter closer to the driver....not too dramatic like a pickup truck shifter, but maybe with a slight bend?
And please refrain from any short armed jokes! haha...
PS...not to get completely off the topic...yes I'm still looking for a CAI. During my search I've noticed that everything steeda is usually about 75% higher than other brands ie...$150 for K&N, $259 for steeda however, I did get the guy to admit to me at least on the CAI the price difference is pretty much just aesthetics and gaurenteed me the same performance. And short shifters are awesome...can anybody donate one?

gmflash check out the steeda Comfort Pro Shifter Handle. It has a bend that brings the knob in closer to your body. I have one and love it. Cost $40 from steeda. Mine is matched with Triax but is supposed to fit stock as well.
