Default Cruise Control issue

My 98 GT is having issues with the Cruise and the ABS. I have been told that the ABS module has something to do with the cruise, or that the systems are somehow interconnected. My ABS light has been on sinced the rebuild. I am replacing the ABS pump/module tomorrow afternoon. Finally got ahold of one.

The cruise is only currently working sporadically and when I do get it to engage it shuts off by itself whenever I hit a moderate to good size bump.

Any chance that the ABS module/pump could be a part of the Cruise problem?

Any thoughts? Anything else I should check out while I have everything apart?

Also: Any tips for Priming/bleeding the ABS pump?

Bleeding an ABS pump is a PITA. It'll take a while to bleed fully.

It sounds like the CC switch on your brrake pedal is bad/mispositioned.

Is it true that the ABS module has something to do with the Cruise? Keep in mind that the whole front of the car was GONE... I am wondering if there was some undetected damage to the under hood wiring harnass.

Is there anything special about bleeding that pump? Any special proceedure or anything?

No, the cruise control is seperate. Only the traction contriol and ABS are together (hydraulic).

An ABS pump/module has two vanes. The primary is always open, even during normal driving conditions. It is bled just like calipers/brake lines are. The secondary vane is the one that is controled by the solenoid (read from speed sensors) and can only be bled with a diagnostic scan tool, or in house.

All manufacturers (oem and aftermarket) bench bleed ABS pumps before shipping them out, so you don't have to. You most likely won't need to bleed the secondary vane of the pump, it should already be done. Bosch does this for all replacement pumps. You can however bleed the primary vane, as it's just like bleeding your normal 4 corners.

Thanks Mark,

The install of the ABS pump was VERY straightforward, and I didn't need to bleed anything. Like you said, it was pre-primed.

ABS is all good now. Guess I can start on the Cruise.

The Cruise worked fine until I had them replace the steering wheel. After that it worked for about a week, then sporadically and now virtually never.

Is it a scary thing to pull out the air bag and look around to see of a switch came loose or a wire was not connected properly or something? Is it something I should worry about doing, like setting off the bag in my face or something?

No... you'll want to pull the battery cables, and let the car sit for ~20 min. That eliminates any charge that may be left in the airbag module. To pull the air bag, just remove the 2 bolts on the side of the steering wheel (there will be caps covering the bolts).

I have a 2000 Gt and noticed the other night my cruise control buttons do not light up. Do they have internal lights or not. My 2000 Ranger with the same style steering wheel and cruise control buttons light up at night.

i dont think mustangs have light up steering wheel buttons.

another thing you might want to check is the switch on the end of the master cylinder. i believe that is the switch that tells the cruise to shut off when you hit the brake pedal. there is a big recall on F150s and expeditions in which they replace these switches, and a new harness. might very well be the problem on your car too. or do they even have those? shizz sorry i cant think right now its late
