Default Whinding noise under hood?

I am trying to figure out what it is. I am new to the Boards here and just purchased my 1999 Mustang GT Conv. It has right at 53,000 miles. It kinda sounds like a pully going bad or something. And it also acts funny when I am running between 45-60 mph by sputtering a little bit. And also idles kinda funny sometimes when I am stopped. Any help would be really appreciated. I don't have a clue about fixing cars so thats why I am here. So no abbreviations please. lol Thanks for any help guys. It costs too much to take it to the shop nowadays. Thanks again.

Helloooooooooooooooo lilstrat!
It really could be a number of things, what you need to do, is open the hood, and have someone rev the engine slowly while its cold, then when it warms up and see if you can narrow it down. A wine noise could come from the Alternator, Power Steering pump, a bad electric fan could also. So could a bad waterpump, as well as a bad Air conditioning pump. Let us know if you need anymore help!

Well it sounds like the pully from the belt. When I rev it up when it tightens the belt it starts doing it. If I am riding down the road it only does it up until it goes into Over Drive. Then it stops. When I rev it up it gets louder.

Any idea on why it sputters while I am runnin between 45-60mph ? It usually does it when I am in heavy traffic. And a little bit of an idle problem when I am sitting still at a redlight or something also.

at the beginning when you select a thread for the 4.6 tech, look at the top. Pin'd up there is what you need to read, most 4.6's experience that at some point. Could be anything from a vacuum leak to a bad sensor for your emissions, ect.

If it is the fan belt itself squealing, check the tensioner pulley. Sometimes they do wear out, or it could just not be applying enough pressure. My Mustang sweaks a little when I shift hard from 2-3 3-4 4-5

do you have the ac on? or does the ac work? could be a locked up compressor. tensioner or idler pulley. i would take off the belt and spin each of the accessories by hand. they should all spin smooth, waterpump and ps will have more resistance than the others, but none of them should feel really rough when you turn them. could also be the timing chain tensioners. if the noise is still present with the belt off(only do this with a completely cold car), then it may be the tensioners. the stumbling kinda makes me think fuel filter. i would change that first.
