I just recently bought a 96 Gt 5spd with 80000 miles on it. I just put a mgw short shifter in but it did this before i installed it. when you shift quickly from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd it scratches and almost grinds the gear! If i shift slower and let the RPMs fall a bit it doesnt do it. Is it my syncronizers or do i need a new clutch?? can anyone help me out with this?
I already changed the fluid in it to the royal purple when i changed the shifter hoping it would help but it didnt. If it helps diagnos my problem when i'm in neutral while running and as soon as i push in the clutch put it in second quickly it grinds too which is what made me think maybe a clutch but maybe it is both??
I'd think it's still the synchros. Maybe have it serviced and check the clutch and throw out bearing while you're at it. Tripleblack really knows his stuff and is more than qualified to give advice.

im going to have it checked in a couple weeks. I'm new to the mustang scene and have been going nutz with mods and have been putting off the tranny issue coz its gonna be down while they do it and its not gonna be cheap.
I bet you're right, of course. The 96 and 97 both came with the T45's.
Though there are T5's everywhere nowadays.
I'd still bet on synchros whether its a T5 as he says or not (of course, my prejudice as a long-time struggler with the T5 in my old 88 LX might be the source of some of that).

he doesn't have a T5... the bellhousing bolt pattern is MUCH different than a 4.6's. However, you can adapt on a dog ring'd T5 drag race transmission to a 4.6 with some work to a Lakewood bellhousing.
maybe it is a t45 i dont know like i said i'm new to the mustang scene altogether. either way my problem still exists whether a t5 or t45. But thanks for clearing it up that its t45

Yes, it very much sounds like a synchro. The reason you let the RPM's drop, is that synchro's do not like RPM. That is why high RPM race cars use dog ring tranmissions, that don't have synchro's. Problem with that is, you can't downshift.

The idea with the Lakewood works? Must be the LA 15230. Thats the one for the 96's. (Check this out - that one is for a top loader - I bet you were talking about a T5 Bellhousing).
I plucked his query right from the forums home page. Should have paid more attention to where it was sitting!
I sure wish I knew then (1989, when my 88 first had problems) what I know now about T5's.

It's probably because i've been drinking tonight, but i'm confused
Issue already resolved here but I'll just add that mine does the exact same thing and has done it every since I first owned the car. During colder weather or if I don't let the car warm up properly I will get the 1st to 2nd grind. It's never gotten worse or better since buying the car in 99. Once it's warm it's fine and you can bang gears all day long with no problems.
I'm ready for a new clutch now as I have squeeked out 111,000 on the stocker so I might have it addressed all at once when I dig in to it.

hydraulic throw out bearings suck when cold.it's more then likely the synchros.but if it's doing it in all shifts it's the clutch and the synchros are screwed because of the clutch. see a lot of bent shift forks to.
