Default Reality bites

In the end, best way is to lower the K member.

Alternative is loosening the motor and jacking IT up to make room (careful with this, of course - danger will robinson, danger).

There's a reason shops charge a chunk for this job...

I agree tripleblack. Long tubes are a real pain to put in. And if you jack the engine up, you'll need to go at least a foot and a half to have enough room to wrestle it in without scratching and scarring the tubes.

The 99-04 cars are really tough to get long tubes in. Much harder than the 05's. Likely to scrape if your suspension is lowered, too.
AND they add just 10 or 15hp for all the expense and trouble.

In my list, its one of the toughest and most expensive mods with some potential side effects.

Whitemike, I hope these are good ceramic coated headers ("good" meaning they are coated inside and out - this helps make power AND keeps most of the heat inside where it belongs). If they aren't I'd consider how close they are to the starter, other wiring, fuel lines and brake lines. Consider wrapping them or adding heat shielding or both. Best time to do either is NOW, not after you have them on and discover they are frying starters - feet - and boiling brake fluid or gasoline.

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news. It is one of the hardest jobs on these cars. I personally refuse to do it - I don't have a good facility for pulling motors, and that is what is really required to do it right.

Default K

The best way I've seen involves fabbing up a heavy angle-iron brace that bolts across the tops of the strut towers and then you hang the motor from that with chains (other wise, the drivetrain and motor want to come with the K member, which is a lot of weight). You suspend the motor first, then drop the K member (great time to check the motor mounts - the passenger side usually goes first).

Its really not a quickie job. If you have a lift to work on and can do some welding, its not too bad.

The alternative involves disconnecting lots of stuff from the motor, wooden blocks, a big strong floor jack, some chain, and lots of cussing.

Hey bro,

I recently took some longtubes off my buddies car because hes seeling them to me. It took me like an hour to get both headers off. Best way, is to unbolt the motor mount from the K member, then put a piece of 2x4 on ur jack and put it under the oil pan, and jack the engine up, and unbolt the motor mount from the engine and u can EASILY get at the bolts for the longtubes, all the bottoms and even 2 of the tops from under the car, and adjust how high u have the engine jacked up in order to get at the last top ones, Trust me, this is alot easier then dropping the K member.

Hope this helps,
Andy
