Default 2002 Mustang GT: need help diagnosing engine knock

I have an 02' gt with 36k miles and I have a knocking/pinging problem at mid to WOT thottle under normal driving conditions. I did have a Hypertech tune on the car and I took it off to see if that was the problem and it's still happening even with a stock tune and 93 octane, just not as bad.

Any suggestions...

Check your TPS voltage...

I say this because what you are describing is what is called "tip-in" pinging. This is the grey area in the transition from open loop to closed loop fuel tables. The EEC is programmed on a TPS delay called acceleration sensory and recovery. The acceleration sensitivity number is the sensitivity of the TPS sensor as recognized by the EEC. By entering a larger number here, you are in a sense, delaying the TPS tables. The Recvr number is the duration of time you want this sensitivity to take effect.

If your TPS voltage is fine, you're doing to need to have a tuner adjust those TPS delays, so that your engine will dump fuel in earlier.

My tip in pinging and pinging under WOT turned out to be a dirty MAF and/or the PCV. I cleaned the MAF and installed a new PCV at the same time and that fixed the problem

check the spark plugs too - excessive carbon buildup, gap, proper torque etc. An old ex of mine had a pinging problem - the spark plugs were not even finger tight by the firewall.

Thanks Mark,

I will look into the voltage on the tps. That should be the right place to start because I already replaced my plugs and cleaned the MAF already. Come to think about it, I did replace the TPS with a cheap discount auto brand part about 2 months ago. I prob. need to go get a OEM tps.

It could be a lot of things. Bad/clogged injector, bad TPS, bad connection in the fuel system, carbon buildup, lots of things. Check the easy things first, and proceed from there.
