Default 2004 Mustang GT steering wheel shake at 55 mph

I've got FR500 18x9's in the front and at 55mph the steering wheel shakes. I've balanced all 4 tires twice and the steering wheel still shakes. When I put the stock tires/rims on the car the shaking stops. Any idea on what could cause this?

who balanced the tires? since its only with the FR500 wheels that it does this, i would say either get them re-balanced by a different shop (i tend to like firestone, but thats mainly because of their customer service and the fact that they do it right at the one i like going to).

it could also be that you are picking up a lot more road noise/vibrations because of the bigger tires, but that doesnt happen too often

Once at Tire Kingdom and the 2nd at Tires Plus. I'll try Firestone next, who knows.... maybe I'll get someone who knows what they're doing.

Where ever you go next, have them ck the balance on the tire first, in other words do not take off the weights just ck the balance. It might not be the balance, coudl be bent rim and/or a bad tire

Yea or just a defective rim, a broken belt, a bubble, water in the tire, a flat spot. Did u try to put the front rims on the back or do u have different size tires. I had a really bad bent rim on my wifes eclipse and put the bent one on the rear fixed the steering wheel vibration, and u could not even feel a vibration from the rear. U also could have the front tires put on the back rims and see if this fixes the problem. U will not feel any vibration from the rear unless it is very dramatic like a wobbling rim, which I doubt is the case with your tire problem. Also have a buddy drive beside u at about 55 and look at the rims to see if the rims are warped bad.

I would suspect a shifted or broken belt if they've been balanced repeatedly and it still vibrates.

Thanks everyone! I'll try another balance and if that doesn't work I'll
try some different rims and tires. What about 18x9's all around? Would that be better than 18x10's in the rear and 18x9's in the front? Or is it just a matter of "The look"?

18X9 on all 4 would look good too.

Then I would be able to rotate them.

this is a stupid comment but make sure the 4 bolts on your driveshaft are tight and all 5 lugs on each tires are on tight wich is common sense but i at one time in my life i over looked it and i had the same wheel shaking at about 45 50 mph

not a stupid comment at all. i completely forgot about the driveshaft, which happened to me a few times. if its loose, put some red loctite on all four bolts.

Maybe your wheels got through QC check faulty... Even CNC isn't perfect.

I would definately say go with firestone. I was having problems with my alignment and steering wheel shaking, even the ford delership I bought my car from said everything was ok...even though I'm a girl I think I know when my tires are wearing differently...but I had to replace a tire and they were the only ones who could fix my alignment and stop the shaking...KY road ways are not good for Mustangs by the way.

could also be a bad u joint on the shaft, or a tie rod, or possibly the rack and pinion. since the problem goes away when the wheels are switched, its a bit unlikely.
Most likely the wheels / tires or even front suspension - different geometry with different size tires.

I am presuming the new wheels fit on the hub snugly? You may need a st of cocentric rings if they're too loose. (usually can't return wheels once they had a tire mounted)

check and make sure the wheels are hub centric this can cause this problem. also try a aftermarket wheel shop that does road force balence. ask for it if there is a flat spot or a small bend in the wheel this will make it a lot better. also the road force tell you what the problem is.
