Default What started as a great night at the track, then took a hard left!! TECH INFO NEEDED

So ran 9 passes at my local track, the last street legal race of the season and everything was going great. great r/t, good 60' times, and whipping some serious import as* all night. then after the last pass i returned to the staging lanes and steam poured out from under the hood!!! oh no i thought. upon further inspection i noticed a few drops of antifreeze, but all the hoses and such seemed ok. So i decided to leave and head home anyway to be safe, but i didnt make it more than 200 yards before i was bellowing white smoke the front/side/rear/top of the car. and on top of it the one time i didnt bring any tools. i thought what the hell the mustang has been good to me. so here i am halfway from the track and 2 miles to the nearest of anything and its 1030pm. Obviously im screwed but being a mechanic/technician i always find away and did with some help of a fellow racer leaving the track too and have a few things i needed. (I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE COMPASSION FROM FELLOW RACERS, and good thing i was in a mustang and not a ricer. lol.) sorry for so much no technical question upfront (i'll be surprised if its not move )

now the tech: the problem was the nipple/spout on the back of the intake manifold that has a heater hose attached to it, completely broke off. the nipple itself which is part the casting of the intake was gone. Now how this could of happend blows me away. Have any of you heard of this breaking there?? It hadnt looked brittle or anything and its next to the firewall, so nothing could of hit it, so who knows.
ANY COMMENTS OR OPINIONS WOULD BE GREAT. ITS UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY, BUT IF I CAN GET A MANIFOLD NEW FOR LESS THAN 200 BUCKS I'M GOING TO DO IT MYSELF, I THINK. ANY WAY THANKS FOR READING!!

yeah, that actually happened to me. flooded #1-4 cylinders and caused a misfire in each. why it broke? dunno really know. a new one from FRPP will cost you right about $200 or so, or you can look around and find a used one for about $30.

hmmm. i wonder is i should pay my 200 dollar deductible and have the dealer do it, or save some dough and do it myself. but with a used one, i kinda risk the same thing sooner though, right?!

All the time in labor in changing it out isnt worth going with a used one. My opinion is Get a new one and dont do that repair again in six months.

well, here is the thing. just because its new doesnt mean its not going to happen again. i put a used '02 manifold on my '98 and i have yet to have any problems from it. wouldnt be a bad idea to have the dealer do it, that way you will have a warranty from them

Cool

FYI, you know not to tell your insurance company or your ford warranty that you broke it at the track right? Most people know, but I thought I would remind you!

If the part is around $200.00 I would not turn it at all on the deductable. Anytime you get ready to upgrade, add a new car, etc.they check to see if you have had any claims. Yeah, your insurance will not say anything now, buy later....... when you add a car! Your rates will shoot up!

i dont know about the rates, i payed 2000 k and have already used it for an new tranny and now this. anyway i know not to say i was at the track, wouldnt of mattered anyways. it was only a matter of time. i know the guys at the dealer (service manager is a friend) so all good there. i dont think they can look at my claims if i buy a new car, hell there are so many different companies offering extended warranties they would have no way of counter referencing eachother.

ive seen this happen on police cars. the brass nipple you speak of is just pressed into the plastic portion of the intake. the only metal part is the front crossover. i think its funny that they have the revised intake and then the back port comes apart because of the same reason the front part failed. get a new one from ford and have them install it. like X said you get a 12 12 warranty on it.

before i read the: now the tech, i knew exactly what you were about to say i have 2000 model and it happen to me when i missed a gear and i thought i had blew it up at first. then realized the problem the nipple had completly broke off n i thought the only thing to do was get a whole new manifold but i rigged it up the cheap way with a hollow socket from a 4 wheeler tool kit and JB weld!!! its held up for about 3 months and 3 whole nitrous bottles later... im very proud of it suprised me greatly... but still plans of a new typhoon manifold ive heard there good...

Default Nipple

Its probably just the nipple that went bad, but there are a few things I'd recommend you check...

Check your motor mounts (particularly your passenger side). If that mount went, the motor would have jerked upwards and put a lot of strain on a certain hose/nipple...

Of course, these mounts are infamous for letting go at such times.

As for replacing the intake, I always like to consider an upgrade at the same time. There is the P51 out there, and some others. Not cheap, but rather than just put yourself back where you were with the money and labor, why not shoot for a little bit of performance at the same time?

And why not the TFS intake and have a Bullitt style air inlet?

Intakes are a topic I need to freshen up on - I'll do a review and see if anything new from Edelbrock is out there.
