the gt40 heads will unleash alot of power, thats the big diff between a cobra vs gt.I say its worth it deff, and the gears, what type of mpg you looking for?I have the 4.11 rear(great preformance, bad mpg) but you have a 5 spd.. I think 3.73 is the best choice for a strong dailey driver.. the gt40 set up is not hard, be sure to go with all new gaskets and seals for less trouble in future.

Question Are gt40p heads all hype ,or worth the the trouble?

Does anyone have gt4op heads? If so would you say they are worth the trip to the junkyard?MY e7 heads seem to be a weak point in my drive train.

If you're gonna get the GT40P heads you might as well get the Explorer intake as well. These are good heads but you need MAC P specific headers, Explorer spark plugs, and 90 degree plug boots to make them work.
If you can get those heads cheap (not more than ~$500) they're worth it, otherwise go for better-flowing aftermarket aluminium heads.

Don't forget that upgraded valve springs WILL be required. TFS makes a nice drop-in package for $130 or so from Summit.

Also, the FRPP stainless headers are a better choice for about the same price as the MAC's.

Either will be worth it. The P's are more efficient and will net you a little more compression as well. You will need up-graded valve springs(TFS has an inexpensive drop-in kit), and P-specific headers(FRPP's are the best way to go). BBK and MAC LT's also work.

Top it off with a Weiand Stealth or Performer RPM intake, along with a 600-650 Holley, and 3.73's, and you'll have a very nice, streetable 'stang that will pull 280-300 RWHP, and net high to mid 12's with traction at the track.

Definitely, go with the P's. Those 1982 heads are rather wimpy. Go with that spring kit he mentioned, those would be highly advised.
And you should be able to go with either 3:73 or 4:10, depending on if it's a daily driver or not.

I wouldnt mess with the GT40Ps headers are expensive. I went down that road when I was younger and wasted alot of time and money when I could have bought a set of Aluminum heads. I ended up going out cheap bought a set of RPM's and my car ran like it had never ran with the GT40Ps.JMO Dave

Do it. Many people have with great results. It is way worth it for the price. Sure you can get more out of other heads but you will pay more.

I would kill to even be able to find Explorer heads in my local Junk Yards. Heads are $70 a piece for me but NO Explorer heads around here.
