Hey there Mustangers...have a question for ya'll...im looking to buy a new mustang...now i have always owned the 5.0 mustang...I owned a 88gt and a 95gt...i don't know wheather to go back to the fox body...because i really love the fox body...or to go w/ a 4.6...people have told me it is way easier to get power out of a 4.6?...and r the 4.6 as reliable as the 5.0's are?...what do u guys think i should get?...all i have is 8k for a car.
The 4.6 is very reliable, and as much as I too like the old 5.0, maybe consider trying out the 4.6. You've had the Fox and SN95 so you know how they are. I don't see anything wrong with going with a 99-up model.

Ask me why I ran "only" a 13.54.

Yes 4.6 is a very good engine and ya can get a lot of power out fo them if modded right. Ya should be able to find a 99-01 GT in good condition for around 8 maybe, one with low miles might cost ya a lil more.

Now why is the 99 and up 4.6's the best to go with...why should i not go with the 96-98 models?
The heads on the cars are extremely different. You want a 4.6 with the PI head if you are going to try one, however, I cannot reccomend the 4V more... This is one badass engine for it's displacement and you can easily get 400HP with some type of forced induction without to much work to the motor. I will however tell you that once you cross that mark you need to upgrade the bottom unless the car is a 03 04 Cobra.. The 03 04 Cobra can easily exceed 500 RWHP without any modification and I have seen some running more than that with as little as a Kenne Bell BAP with nothing more than CAI, exhaust, Pulley, Port, and some rear end mods. The big question I would ask you is what you intend to do with the car? If it is just to cruise around anything is as good as another if it is a convertible... if you want serious track time I would go with the fox (79-93)... much cheaper parts that are more available IMHO. I am giving you that advice that I took myself on this one. My 04, 69, and 77 are street cars but the duty vehicle is the 91.

For $8k you're not going to get a 4.6 that's faster than a 5.0. The latest generation 4.6's are faster but at least double what u have to spend. I've driven both and I like the 5.0 better. It has much better low and mid-range power which is where u need it most the time. You can get a 345hp 5.0 crate engine, brand new with a warantee for about $4k.
