Unhappy Fox Vehicle Identification Number Location, 1988 Mustang GT

Does anyone know of any other vin locations beside the dash on a 1988 GT Convertible? Here's why I bought my gt a week or so ago and finally decided to use one of those internet decoders and It says mine should be a GT Hatchback? The vin on the dash matches the title. I have been unable to locate the data plate/sticker too

There is also a "buck tag" on the radiator support on the drivers side. It's a small metal tag that is stapled to the rad support. If your car was ever hit it may be history if the rad support was changed. It gives the last 8 digits of the VIN, along with paint color and other codes.

You can see the tag from above. Just look down between the rad and support and the drivers side headlight. I took this pic of mine. Since it's a dark color it may be hard to see. It's below the wiring loom in center of photo

So in the 17 character VIN number, you have code 42 and not 45? Do you know the history of the car?

Vin

I dont know much about the car at all.Either its a factory fluke, not likely or the vin has been changed.Just talked to one the DPS troopers and he is gunna look into it we found the buck tag and the numbers don't match.SO? The car is in too good of condition to not want to keep it. Trooper said there is bunch or possibilities the numbers dont match, good news is neither comes up stolen!!!!!!!!Will keep everyone posted.

Complete VINs are on every body panel on the cars, and on the VIN plate attached to the firewall (base of windshield) and the VCL (door sticker).

Partial VINs are on the body/buck tag, engine, transmission, and tags welded to each inner fender (requires removal of outer fenders to read).

When you said neither comes back as stolen, how did you figure out the entire VIN from the body/buck tag? It won't come back as stolen if it's not even a correct VIN. To know the VIN check digit (9th position) you have to know all of the rest of the 16 postions of the VIN, and then the check digit is calculated by an algorithm.

The '90 Limited Edition is not a feature car. It was made for the Ford/7-UP contest that never materialized. Too long of a story to go into here. Only the '92 and '93 cars are Feature cars.

The correct VIN Number should also be on the stickers on the fenders, hood and the trunk or hatch.

Well I found the other vin numbers and they match the buck tag you guys told me about, the officers are tryin to figure it out and keep me informed they didnt take the car. The vin on the dash and title definately does not match the car . So just a waiting game right now.

You really can'y go by the VIN stickers on the removable body panels as they may have been removed from another vehicle at some prior time and used as accident replacements, for example. Dash VIN and VIN on frame rails is the way to go, IMO.
