Default The 100mpg Mustang...

I'm sure that this has been posted previously but it's worth another look. I'm fascinated as to why he chose, of all cars, an '87 Mustang. Surely there are more appropriate choices! Maybe a Geo Metro? Or an old Beetle!

Regardless, it has to be witchcraft to get the kind of mileage he's talking about with that car. I'm struggling for 15mpg with half the power!

The E85 and all the changes that are needed to run that are probably what was done to it. I'd like to know the specifics.

I'm willing to bet that he put a turbo on a 331 to get that power. I can only imagine how well E85 engines respond to boost since it has such a high octane level.

e85 seems less stable than gasoline. in order to get any benefit it would have to be an ethanol only engine. running e85 in a gasoline engine is actually less mileage than gasoline, but it is a lower cost. this is what ffv's are. gasoline engines that are modified to accept e85. as for boost? it probably does work better because it can handle the compression. so i believe you are right

this might be the same story i read about a couple of months ago. I don't have sound at work, but I noticed he didn't open his hood for all to see.
He should at least put it on a dyno and let it run till the tank is empty and let the media be there to record the result of the mileage.

There was an intercooler peeking from behind the grill on one close up of his front bumper.
nice looking stang.

Good eye on the intercooler. At the bottom left of that close up sequence there looked to be a March ram-air scoop too. We're assuming it's an 8 cylinder (and from the clip it sounds like it might be) - but could it be a 4 or 6 cyl with a turbo?

Seeing as the contest he's entering is a cross-country event, perhaps a low-revving V8 is the best choice.

If this is the same story I read about a few months ago, the guy just used higher compression and had a WHOLE BUNCH of electronics which made the engine use every drop of fuel efficiently.
That is one thing about all cars, is that most gas mileage is lost due to unburnt fuel. Say even 5-10% of gas for every injection into the cylendars was lost, added up that is A LOT of gas that is just completely wasted.
And in the article that I read he said that he couldn't say how he actually acheived this because even if he did, the car companies would never use it.
I don't want to sound like some conspiracy theorist, but you know all car companies are inkahoots with the oil companies.

Here's the one I read...

For the split second you can hear it sounds like 4 or 6 cyl to me. If I had to guess w/ the mph I would say 4 cyl.

I have a quarter of that power and I get a quarter of that gas mileage from my LX 4 banger

Ha, I stand corrected! I was reading a magazine today, while waiting for a custom piece of diamond plate to be welded, and found an article from a car show about this car. Once again not much info, but they did say that he did use a v-8 to make this happen....
