On an 83 Gt if I were to swap from the four gear tranny to a 5 gear would it have to be from another 83 or would an 84 bolt on? Also, do I need to get a new clutch or will my 4-speed clutch work?
If I were to do an 83 4spd to 5spd swap I would use a World Class T-5 out of an 85 or newer V-8 car and also upgrade the flywheel and clutch to a 10-1/2" or 11" from Ford Racing while I had it apart.
Then please explain why '90-'93½ non-Cobra 5.0L T5s are rated at 300 lbs.-ft. of torque and '93½+ non-Cobra 5.0L T5s and '93-'95 Cobra aT5s re rated at 330 lbs.-ft of torque.
I'll tell you why....the '93 Cobra's T5 has phosphate-coated cluster gear and a pocket roller bearing between the input and output shafts, and the non-Cobra T5 before '93 did not. The non-Cobra 5.0L T5 did get those features during the '93 model year.
And by the way, the gearset ratios are the same from late '89 on (when torque capacity went from 265 lbs.-ft. to 300 lbs-.ft.), not '91 on.
Well the Z-T5 is the only T5 rated at 330 ft/lbs. as I just rebuilt one that blew 2nd main gear and cluster set. That rating is due to the super alloy gearset. While the 93-95 Cobra T5's are rated at 310.
