I got my explorer back today w/ the same problem. It needed a fuel pump when I bought it, so I had a shop install it. I know I should have done it myself but I wasnt sure if that was all it needed. They confirmed it was just the pump and replaced. On the way home it read 1/8 tank then ran out. So I called them and had them replace the sending unit for free since its hooked to the pump. Got it back today 1/8 tank ran out of gas. What else would cause that to happen?
Why would that be? But makes sense because you can hear a little fuel and it will run out on a hill then regain fuel when levels out. They also told me it had an 1/8 tank of gas and it ran out in two blocks!
that sounds like its too short , may need to remove tank again and messure from top of tank mounting flange for pump/sender ass, and bottom of tank , then mesure pump/sender ass. and see if its the same, the strainer/sock should be at/near bottom of tank ,

Reason: spelling
Yeah makes me wonder if they are getting the sock/pump in the baffle. I noticed on the stang it was easier to reinstall of to the side then it was to work the pump into the baffle.
if you unhook the sender it should peg full , ground the yellow/white striped wire and it should drop to empty after you cycle the key off to on when wire is grounded,

Well havent messed w/ the guage yet but I was drivin today parked on a hill and ran out of gas, gauge read 1/4 tank. I put 4 gallons of gas in it yesterday, they said they left it run due to battery being low but I wouldnt think 4 gallons worth. I am lost.
Autozone may be the problem. I have never had good luck with Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts, or any other retail parts store fuel pumps. The only aftermarket pump I trust is Napa. Otherwise, I get a Motorcraft from Ford. I've never had problems with Napa or Motorcraft.
