Need help w/ 1997 Cavalier- Need all techs and electrical GURUs
My girlfriend decided I wouldnt let here buy a cavalier so she went and bought it on her own. Now, Guess who gets to fix! Anyways sorry to post a Chevy on a Ford Forum but this is over my head. I drove the car yesterday and running xtra warm at idle and cold during driving. So bad t stat. Then I noticed another problem, it runs up past halfway, so I checked the fan. No fan running. I pulled the plug to throw into "fail safe mode" fan came on. Ran codes just as I thought temp switch. Replaced today still no fan. Turned on AC/def still no fan. Then looked a AC clutch no clutch engaging, but the AC light comes on. Are these conn? Could it all be due to a bad AC clutch relay?
I can hear the fan relay kick when engaging fail safe. Looking at the dia's not easy to follow, but it looks like the ECM controls this stuff?
I am guessing that it is cold in MO while you are driving. You really dont need a fan above 35 mph because there is enough air moving over the radiator. So you changed the temp switch on the fan or for the engine temp? It sounds like the computer is not turning on the fan for some reason in normal opperation. In emergency mode I am guessing that the fan runs all the time no matter what. I would take it back to the dealership and ask them whats up. If you recently bought it I would ask them to fix it for free, as they should have checked for something like that. It might be the computer or it might be another sending unit. Good luck man.

fan is controlled by pcm, you need a scanner to read the data to pinpoint the problem. A good scanner can toggle the fan relay to let you know if the pcm is bad. Someof the cavi's dont turn on the fan till 225deg.

Yeah Ive let it reach 235 or so no deals. Thanks for the lead on the PCM does that have an effect on AC clutch or is that just not coming on because its low/empty of 134?
Just like a femme, do exactly what they're told not to do. No wonder we die first, look what we have to live with.
Tell me about it. I unhooked the temp switch so its in fail safe all the time. She b*itched because she cant read the guage now! Like she read the _____ thing before. She wouldnt have bought it if she had read it before. Thought about hookin a red button to an ejection seat and tellin her it was to turn on the fan.
