Default Certification Label

I just recently bought my car and yesterday was doing a VIN check at www.mustangspecs.com when I realized that I have been checking the VIN according to the door and not the tag on the dash. The two VIN's are different, so my door must have been replaced. I am wanting to find the factory specs of my car but I can't because the Certification Label is for another Mustang. Does anyone know if there is any other way to look up factory specs for your car?

Question should really be why was the door replaced. I think if you check the dash VIN, you should be able to find out what you need to know.

You can call Ford's Customer Relationship Center (CRC) at 1-800-392-3673 (US only) or 1-800-565-3673 (Canada only) with your VIN and they will send you a "History 999" report (CRC calls it a "build sheet"). Do not trust that report to be 100% accurate though. You should treat it as a novelty only. They often have egregious errors, such as..
  • Mustangs ordered with the Black Magic Feature Car option. The Black Magic option was available only on the Capri.
  • An '83 Mustang ordered with the Ghia Sedan Decor Group. The Ghia model stopped after '81.
  • An '83 Mustang with Charcoal interior trim. Charcoal was not available until '84.

Marti Auto (.com) has all of the original Ford invoices but they only have individual reports available for purchase through the '79 model year.

Those two places are the only two that are going to be able to tell you anything with you supplying only a VIN.

There is a 4" x 2" metal tag attached to the radiator core support, behind the driver-side headlamp. That has several codes on it indicating exterior and interior colors, engine, transmission, convenience options, etc. I know a lot of them and can decode what I know.

Thanks guys! I have been trying to figure out if my car was a factory 5-speed and the certification label says it was, then I got the idea to check to see if the VIN on the door matches my dash, but it didn't. My door is from a 1990 GT and mine is a 1991 GT.

The Body/Buck Tag has the last six digits of a VIN stamped to it. If it matches the last six of the VIN on the firewall (visible through the windshield) you'll know it goes with the car.

There are one or more transmission codes on that tag.

There is also a partial VIN (last eight character) stamped to the main case of T5 transmissions. Should be on the passenger-side, just aft of the bellhousing. That partial can obviously be matched to the VIN on the firewall.

Thanks for the advise. I called the number you gave and Ford is going to send me a VIN decoder and the manufacturer build sheet. I really appreciate the help.

I agree with checking the Buck Tag, it is up on the Core Support by the Driver Side Headlight.
