Got to really try out my new Ford Racing 4.10 Gears
Well I got a little bit of seat time with my new Ford Racing 4.10 Gears and wanted to throw some stuff out there since questions about gears seem to dominate the forums sometimes.
First off I have a fully stock suspension (except lowering springs)
I have cheaper "Kuhmo Ecsta" tires, 245/50/16, Tread wear 400, Trac A, Temp A.
Also when the gears were done I had the Trac-Loc rebuilt becuase I was Dog Legging
At the time my car was stock and I had a flat on the Highway and my son was asleep in his car seat so I caused some run flat damage to get the car off the Highway and to a safe place to throw on the spare. Since I had no mods on the car I bought the least expensive tires at the time.
So for you guys running a modified suspension with better tires you can expect better results than me for traction.
Let me just say that 1st is crazy, I cant go WOT in 1st without completely blowing the tires loose. WOT is not even needed. I can leave in first using less than full throttle and its faster than the stock gears were at full throttle. 2nd feels like 1st, 3rd feels like 2nd, 4th feels like 3rd, You get the idea. The car can start off in 2nd if you want. The torque is amazing. WOT in 2nd gear then hitting 3rd is nothing but fun. It pulls HARD!! In any gear you will feel the fabric pattern from your seat pressed into your back.
Yes it does kind of suck on the Highway, everyone in concerned about that so I will tell you that the RPM's are up there. But its not the end of the world. It is not TOO bad to deal with. If you want something you must give up something else in return. So yes I guess if you are really concerned about the RPM's that much then go with some 3.73's but I will tell you that when I am on the street and I go through those gears and get pushed back in the seat, I love those 4.10's and think to myself I am so glad I went with them. Just today I hit 4th and the tires let out a small chirp. Thats amazing with a soft clutch and my mods. I also had one incident were I hit second and the tires spun with some wheel hop, so Lower Control Arms may be in my future if the problem continues.
All said and done my "Denim Dyno" gives a two thumbs up.

dang!!!! Makes me wanna get some 4.10's ASAP. First I think I'll start with an alum DS, then do the gears. If A guy is gonna get a SC should I maybe get 3.73's??? or stay with the 3.55's???

My girlfriend calls it a waste of money, but I see it as saving money(and time away from her) if I install it myself

First off... congrats on you 5.0... that sounds like a little too much fun
Do you guys think Ill have too much of a traction issue in my 2000 GT if I go 4.10? Im planing on upper and lower control arms, car is lowered and I have good tires.

Awesome thread...ya got me all exited I originally planned and purchased 4:10's in my 93 but with a T-56, Drag Radials and <cough> 347...can't wait to feel it on the Denim Dyno
The Denim Dyno is priceless
On your 2000 I'm here to tell you first hand I have 3:73 and was running Falken tires. They were good for traction for about 19k miles and then not really much grip if you launch around the 2500 rpm. I have springs and control arms.
I went D/R's two weekends ago, I will never again put street tires on the rear of my cars unless I have a long trip planned.
