there is nothing wrong with a 8.8 rearend. other then the "C" clips and jumping up to a 31 spiline axle its as tough as standard ford 9".
the 9" inch you were looking at what did it come out of? did it have a "N" on the differential. how many horizontal ribs did it have on the dif. also was it a big bearing or small bearing 9" if its a big bearing 9" with a "N" (nogular) get it and sell it for 500. if not dont bother. use the money for gears if you dont have them or start peicing together a 5 lug kit with 31 spline axles for your current 8.8.

I agree there is nothing wrong with an 8.8. And as far as ring and pinion, yes it CAN BE as tough as a "STANDARD" 9". But the 9" has a far superior housing and axle bearing set-up then the 8.8. Plus the removible third member makes it nice to make a gear change at the track.

A trick thing to do is to use 9" housing ends and the 9" axles. This will eliminate the 8.8 axle "C" clip and give you a much better axle bearing. The guys running Rangers out in the desert have done this for years.

You can run plenty of power through the 8.8. I was launching at 6k with slicks on stock axles with no problems. I would'nt make a habit of that though.

very true...if your going to mod the 8.8 with the 9" tube flanges and and custom langth axles might as well just have the 9" narrowed and tossed in. but i do agree there is some peace of mind with a 9" that if an axl breaks your tire wont roll past you to the finish line!

Stang axles for the 9" run for about $600 up here plus the narrowing.

will an 8.8 hold up to a 550+ big block ford? if not does anyone know who can set up a 9 inch for a 5.0 {in california}?
