Default 1992 Mustang LX Convertible Top Help

my 92 lx convertible top seems to be straining now a days. The top will come down just fine but going up it will move about two inches and quit. The motor will keep running but it wont move it up. Does this sound like a motor problem or another part, i am not famiiar at all with convertible top parts.

If it comes up with a little assistance from someone "helping" it up, while you run the motor, it sounds like a part. I forgot what it is called exactly. It happened to me a couple of years ago. But from what I remember, the part is made out of plastic and snaps sometimes. If this is it, fortunetly it is inexpensive to fix. Less then $100. Again I'm going off of memory which is very foggy about this, but I have been there before and remember being very happy it wasn't a pricey convertible problem. My suggestion is find a convertible shop in your area and have them take a look. Chances are, they have the part laying around the shop and can fix it right then and there. I think I waited about an hour or less for them to get this done. I hope you find this useful, and thats all it is. Good luck

i had that problem to before my motor went out. The motor is starting to go bad, all it takes is a little help while the motor is going. even though it goes down fine i would help it down too to try and preserve the motor. Try what Battlr said too. it could just be a part but for me it was the motor itself going bad. there are ways too to make the top a manual up and down if your interested.

I have a '91 vert, and had her in the shop just this morning working on the top. The tops has the mechanical frame parts, the motor, the hoses, and two "cylinders" that are basically hydraulic rams that push and pull the top up and down. If the frame isn't out of whack, and it can be moved up and down manually, then it is probably the motor/hydraulic parts. If the motor is still turning and doesn't shut-down (the relay), then it is either you are out of fluid, or the cylinders are wearing out. Got leaks? Fox Resto has all of the parts here Convertible Hydraulics - Fox Mustang Restoration

I had just had my top redone, and half of the frame replaced, and it needed to be adjusted.

Good luck.

I have an 85. My top motor use to move pretty slow while making a loud whining noise. The last time that I dropped the top, it didn't come back up. I had to pull it up manually. It wasn't easy either. I'm not sure how to troubleshoot it. I don't like randomly throwing parts at a problem without out identifying the source. Any clues as to what I should look into? Your help is appreciated.
