Default Tire Rubbing and spacers? Help needed

I currently have 17x9 cobras on my 91 gt. It was lowered about 1"-1.5". The front right tire rubs on the fender. I took it to a tire place and they said it was because of spacers on the rims but i was wondering why only one side would rub. They also said i should go back down to stock size(16") but i think that was just to try to sell me some rims because 17" should fit pretty easily on a fox. I was wondering if i take the spacers out if they will still fit. I was lookin to get FR500 rims but dont want to get them if i am going to have the same issue. I was wondering if 17x9 in the front and 17x10.5 in the back will fit properly. I also will only probably be running 225/40 in the front and 255/45 in the back. Any help is appreciated

What size tires do you have?I wouldn't think you need spacers at all.

Are they 4-lug or 5-lug? I have 5 lug bullitt rims and I had to use wheel spacers because the hole in the center of the rim wasn't large enough to slide over the spindle...mine are 17x9.
